I went and saw this film last night. I have not read the book, but I plan to.

I won't go into this whole movie, but I was pleasantly surprised to see such a nice show. I was riveted the entire movie...rare for me.

The real treat...was the 3D. I remember those old 3 D movies that gave you a headache. This one just added realism. No headache.

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

Default Life of Pi is a very disturbing movie

Do NOT bring your children to see this one.

Spoiler

The movie seems to be a young man's journey with a tiger on the Pacific Ocean, but it is only a metaphor.
The true story, as revealed at the end, is that the young man ate three humans in order to survive, including his own mother. The tiger is simply a metaphor of the young man's dark side.

Even the critics fail to point out the "island" he drifted on represents his mother's body, with worms all over.

The message of the movie is very confusing and disturbing. The director Ang Lee is an atheist himself, so please do not expect it to be a pro-religion piece.

say what? Sorry, I don't get your point. I'm a Christian, considered this one of the greatest books of this or the last century, and can't wait to see the movie.
eta: "please do not expect it to be a pro-religion piece" is imo a great endorsement.
As a mom, I agree it might not be a good movie to drag your rug rats to see.

I'm a little surprised that many viewers believe the first version of the story.
However it is obvious that the latter version, told to the the Japanese, is the truth.

It turns out that people in the movie also find it too cruel and choose to believe otherwise. But maybe that is why (some) people need religion.

I haven't read the book, but you can definitely tell that the movies misses out on a lot. It was not a particularly good movie though I'm sure the book is probably a good read.

I tried to read it a while back, and couldn't get past the first couple chapters. Obviously it resonates with some people, but I thought it was simply awful. (Don't think I'll be seeing the movie ..... )

Me too!! I tried reading the book 2x and couldn't get going ... but I think I will see the movie as a form of Cliff Notes.

I hear this movie is visually stunning with a great story as well. Many great stories have either been or contained metaphors. This actually makes me want to see it more. I have no kids so no worries.
