I can think of three such movies. I'm wondering if anybody has ever seen any of these:

Gigot - 1962 - Starring Jackie Gleason
Ship of Fools - 1965 - Starring Vivien Leigh, Lee Marvin, George Segal and Jose Ferrer
Bedazzled - 1967 version - Starring Dudley Moore, Raquel Welch

- My Dinner with Andre (1981)

- 1900 (Italian - original named Novecento, 1976) Super great performance by DeNero, but Burt Lancaster's small roll performance is shockingly outstanding. Ultra long movie. Ah, ahem, ah.... this is the real deal with regards to "socialist propaganda" type movie. 4 hammer and sickles rated.

- Taming of the Shrew (1967) Franco Zeffirelli's directs E. Taylor and Richard Burton at the height of their real life combative romantic life in Shakespeare's Taming of the shrew. Burton's angry outbursts and his command of language, vocal control, and enunciation are worth the price to seek out this old movie.

A few others like a early silent movie (long version) of the aftermath of the French Revolution and the ego's and human desire to power & domination, the corruption of the soul caused by excessive political power unchecked, and the ultimate rise of the man who would be Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Movie ends as Napoleon takes on the mantel of Autocratic Leadership of the struggling French Republic in order to 'save' the revolution, which was a revolt from dictatorial autocratic rule.

Phil

PS: The version with Dudley Moore in lead roll of Bedazzled is still a great display of 'British Humor' kind of dry at times, and a bit dated in the 1960s. Great choice.

One of my favourite film, nobody ever seems to have heard of or seen before is "The Franchise affair" , a small black and white film English from the early 50s. So far I have not met ONE person who has even heard of it...

Also :

"La Grande Vadrouille" ( a French comedy from the 70s , also one of my favourites)
"Get Low" ( which was only released last year in the US, I saw it in New Mexico, nobody seems to have seen it)
And countless obscure silent and black and white films ( mostly foregin language ones)....

A Prophet
Wow. Such introspection interspersed with such gritty action. Interesting story of assimilation and power struggles, and stunning cinematography.

A High Wind in Jamaica
A favorite for many years. Kids get stranded on a pirate ship, and take to the pirate's life all too easily. But this is not a light-hearted comedy. Anthony Quinn is wonderful.

I Know Where I'm Going
UK, and black and white. Englishwoman has determined her future, but things do not play out as planned. The expository beginning is slow, but then things work up to a crescendo.

I have seen
" Gigot "- Jackie Gleason ( sp ? ) was such a tallent and in this film , he was amazing (IMO)
I have also seen "Get Low". Once again , Robert Duvall at his best.Loved it.

I'll add to the list " The Adventures Of Ociee Nash ". A sweet film about a young girl growing up with out a mother set in 1898 . Keith Carradine plays her Dad and Mare Winningham plays her aunt.
