I don't see why anyone would want the automatic transmission on a motorcycle. Ridley is in the auto tranny market and they have test rides on their bikes during Bike Week in Daytona and Myrtle Beach too. I personally prefer my clutch and shifting my gears and hearing my Screamin' Eagle pipes talk to me.
Auto trannys have been around for a while. It may sound good when I reach my 70's and am old and tired, but I dont think I can take riding without the shifting. Its all part of the experience IMHO. In fact, I am contemplating a suicide clutch on my next bike.
Shifting gears was great back in 1958 when my parents gave me a Lambretta scooter for Christmas, but now I just enjoy getting out for a ride in the country. I have a 150CC scooter that's nearly perfect, but I yearn for more displacement. Would love to buy a Ridley, but not interested in spending that kind of money.
They've had automatic motorcycles for a long time - they're called "scooters".
Also, wasn't Honda's "Pacific Coast" an automatic?
Nothing new. I don't know why anyone would even want an automatic. If you're not coordinated enough to work a clutch and shift lever, then you probably shouldn't be operating a two wheeled vehicle to begin with... Shifting isn't a big deal or even difficult - it becomes rather "automatic" (ha ha) after a while.
If you can't figure out how to shift properly then you shouldn't even be on a motorcycle in the first place. One thing I did years ago was change to "GP style" shift pattern which is reversed from normal 1 up, 2,3,4,5,6 down). Most sportbikes allow you to change this very easily by flipping around linkage.
if manual was so great why are most cars automatic/manumatic/automanual...aka clutchless?
Because most people are lazy and can't drive for $hit, that's why automatics are so popular.
