From the guys on advrider.com that have done this in recent years(Oisin, RTWDoug, etc.), generally they say to do a similar Long Way Round trip, you are looking at around $20,000 to $30,000 to do it, not including the cost of the bike.

The biggest cost that adds up is shipping the bike. If you go to Magadan or Far East Russia, you pretty much these days have to get the bike to Vladivostok and then ferry it to South Korea and fly it out of there.

A guy I work for that organized a Suzuki trip(with cars) from Vladivostok to Magadan, Suzuki chose to charter a C-130 aircraft from Alaska to fly in and pick up the cars and fly them directly to Alaska. The cost was six figures.

If you want to see what it is like to do it on your own, read this story:

What goes around comes around... Dublin to New york - ADVrider

He also did some great videos that are on youtube.

He also talks about costs after the trip is done.

That HAS to be the review of the Suzuki Kisashi! It was an exciting read. Japan to LA, the long way around. Six figures for the transport of that trip? Makes sense. On top of the two Kisashis, I believe they had a truck and a dual sport motorcycle as chase-vehicles. A privately chartered C-130 probably gets pretty expensive.

Back on topic: any motorcycle can get you around the world, if you try hard enough. There's even stories on ADVrider of people taking Harleys and cruisers around! A good dual sport is the go-to bike, though. You can easily spend thousands ($10-15k) on a brand new KTM or BMW GS. Or, if you want to go the cheap route, find a cheap dirtbike and convert it. Slap on headlamps, indicators, and a speedo, and you're all set. They're simple and very reliable, and are a cheap alternative. On the cheap end, you could probably get away with doing the trip for $20-25k, bike included. Plan your route wisely, and ship the bike as little as possible. Of course, you'll want easily $5-10k on the side, in case anything goes wrong.

This rider put knobbies on his Harley and rode it to Inuvik, as well as the trip to Dawson and other off road trips. And then you have Sjaak Lucassen-

Home

so you can do the trip on pretty much any bike
