No Frank, don't check out any of those places. Saint Albans is the place to be. It has it's very own retirement home that was a former elementary school, i think you and your wife would love it. It's located only 1 block from the train tracks so you wouldn't have to sleep with ear plugs in.

I would also like to add that SA is mostly down wind from the Bayer Cropscience plant, so you only wake up with a sulpher odor in the air 1 out of 10 days in the summer.

I would think twice about retiring to the sticks. When you reach your senior years and need a good doctor or need an ambulance you'll find those luxuries are not readily available in the woods.

Check out Milton and Barboursville. These are small towns of about 3,000 that have land like you are looking for on the outskirts. They are also close to Huntington for healthcare, shopping and convenience. Hope this helps.

When the NEW United Hospital Complex comes on line, all a person will need in the sticks is a flat grassy spot large enough to land a Med-i-Vac.
That large roof will be home to 6 medical choppers ready to life-flight at a moments notice...set up to take the pressure off WVU and patrol the interstate of that section of interstate highway we call...'death valley.

Hey guys, thank you all for your help. As I mentioned before I am basically a redneck born in a small village in the mountains with about 30 houses and a church. At age 21, courtesy of the Soviet tanks I ran away, spent some 20 years in Europe, mostly in big cities, came to the US in 1986, lived in New York for a while and ended up in High Bridge, NJ on the PA state line. It's a great town, good people, but getting crowded too. People who invented the property taxes should be castrated, we are paying about $9000 a year. No, this is not a misprint. For me, it is back to the mountains.

Well I learned now that sticks are the woods. This would be a good start.
Hey, Silk I love the smell of the sulfur in the morning!. Great for sinuses.

Tbailey, Milton looks good, I also looked at Lesage that does have some houses with land available.

Kookamus, you are right about the sticks and their distance from medical care. I somehow tend to forget that Cialis is not available in the National Forest area. On the other hand, when you spent most of your adult life fighting the traffic (was driving trucks for about 20 years), sticks are a welcome change.

Hey David, I hope you are right, but with the new universal health care, all the pencil pushers in DC will make a cost efficiency analysis before they give you a flu shot, not to mention a Med-i-Vac. Then again I may be wrong. My friends in UK and Canada are flooding this great country for MRI's and surgeries.

Anyway enough of this rant, thank you guys again for your contributions.

Wow, you've been a member for 2 years and only had one conversation. You seem to know lots about the regular posters here too. Do let us know where you wind up settling down.

Hi BJC, Summersville looks real nice, but Realtor.com didn't show many listings for homes on sale. In any case this town is on my list of places to visit around May.
Harborlady, thanks for your entry. I did register to this site about two years ago, but was pretty much inactive as you have noticed. When the real estate market collapsed, I stopped looking for a while. Not that the market is better now..hehe. My house is on the market about a year and a half and I don't hear much from my agent, maybe he is dead.
In any case I will keep looking, maybe an earthquake will force me to move sooner.

I know TMI, but ..... they are good people and will find you what you are interested in.

Nicholas Chronicle is the local paper, only comes out 1 x per week. I just got mine yesterday and there are some things for sale.

we have a couple houses that we rent if you are interested in staying in one while you are there. Much better than a hotel, you have room to spread out, and ALL of my neighbors are nice and love to meet new people. PVT message me if you are interested

If you get to move there before me, I will just well be happy for you!!! I know of a place that has lake view, wont last long , needs work, but a great house
