I was in Fairmont a few years ago and took this picture of what appeared to be a rather elaborate boulevard under construction across the river from Downtown:

Recently, I came across this picture:

What exactly is going on here? I've searched online for the master plan... to no avail. I would assume an urban boulevard like this would be built to spur real estate development in that central Fairmont area, yet I don't see any buildings under construction.

Can anybody elaborate on this major project in Fairmont (links would be helpful as well)?

It is a new main route into downtown, needed for two reasons. One being the traffic problems on the two lane roads heading into downtown, and two being the concept that a new blvd. connecting downtown with I-79 would spur growth. It sure is a nice highway, but indeed a pork project.

160 Million, You have got to be kidding me! I live in Morgantown and work and Fairmont.... Morgantown could have used that money a lot more. although Morgantown probably needs billions to really solve the congestion issues.

We need a minimum of 12 miles of new highway construction here to meet demonstrated demand and alieviate congestion... far less than state government is p*ssing down the drain on rural highways to nowhere in places where there is absolutely no highway congestion. We have morons and special interest idiots running state government.

12 miles of highway at $160,000,000 per mile = $1,920,000,000.00

If a person eliminated the graft and bribes, didn't have to pay B & O Tax and hired a competent contractor, I feel the job could be done for about 1/3 or $64,000,000. ($5,300,000 per mile or $10,000 per linear foot)

Good luck Morgantown...start saving your pennies...

This is the master plan, located on the official Fairmont website.

Hopefully, this will help revive downtown Fairmont.

I am taking it most of the money was federal, since the State almost never give anything to NCWV.

Is there any news on progress for the waterfront park? The master plan was drawn up in 2002, but I'd imagine with the new road being finished, they'd want to focus on that now.
