Things probably have changed since you moved away and Montreal probably has become more French over time. I encountered at least one person who could not or would not speak in English the last two times I visited and the last time I visited was 2015.

The percentage of people who can speak French and English has increased among francos anglos and allos in Montreal in every census since 1971.

Overall I believe about 35 pc still speak French only and just under 10 pc speak English only.
