I believe there is a move afoot (politically/municipally) to allow bars to stay open later in Montreal.

I'd love for bars to stay open till 6 a.m. i personally wouldn't drink until 6, but just to be out all night in downtown is what many people would love, along with 24/7 metro service.

I remember not wanting to go home at 3 and heading over to one the of 24 hour food spots, and they would be packed!

Basically a lot of the bar owners don't think enough people would stay out to make it worthwhile on a regular basis, but, some did!

Though I see no reason for a law explicitly prohibiting it, as we have now
Thanks for sharing the article.

I know I probably would have been staying out that late.

Quick question about Downtown Montreal, what would be the official boundaries? i consider downtown from Westmount square all the way to the Gay Village west to east, and the south part of Mount Royal all the way to Griffintown/St.Laurence river.

I don't know of official boundaries, but personally I view it as much smaller. More like Guy to Saint-Urbain east-west. Sherbrooke to the north, and to the south, maybe the Ville-Marie expressway.

You don't consider St-Laurent and Berri-UQAM to be downtown?

I don't. They are part of the urban core, certainly, but I wouldn't call them "downtown." I call them the Plateau and Latin Quarter, respectively. Actually I pretty much just call the Latin Quarter "Saint-Denis" if I'm to be honest

I guess that's the cool thing about Montreal. In any other North American city (barring Manhattan) that area could be considered the core area.

So just a little report about downtown, I've gone downtown from last Monday till today and i must say it seemed more packed than usual this time of year (must be the warmer weather). Between Atwater-Guy was very busy (I'd call that our second Chinatown/Koreatown) seems like every year there's more and more students. St.Catherine street was packed as usual especially towards the financial core, and the eastern part of downtown QDS(including Latin quarter)/"red light" district had a nice pedestrian foot traffic. Since yesterday was St. Patrick's day parade, obviously it was very crowded, and much more so than when i went in 2014, very difficult finding a bar that wasn't packed. But with warmer weather, plus more population downtown i think its only gonna go up from here, plus Thor Equities bought more property recently so it must be a good sign.
