Hi everyone You've got a great forum!

As the title says, I'm looking for English core school recommendations in Montreal. I have seen a few posts on this but most appeared to be dated a few years or more and neighbourhoods and schools can sometimes change a lot in that time.

Before we go any further, yes, I have been educated in English and French (although I am sadly rusty ) and come from a bilingual Ontario home and as a parent I have both English and French language rights.

Both my sons have been educated in Canada in English and are now in Grades 2 & 5. I would love to have them both educated in French but my older son has a learning disability (dyslexia) and although exceptionally bright struggles with reading and written work in his first language (English) so changing to core, bilingual or immersion French education is not an option at this time though he works hard and enjoys his French classes.

Both boys are looking forward to moving to Montreal and sharpening their French skills with their maman. The purpose of our move is to allow me the time and environment, during my online distance studies with Athabasca for upgrading my existing degree, to improve and restore my French language skills (which will also be supported by French language university studies). My end goal is to hopefully be accepted to McGill's bilingual law programme.

I have read the island as a whole is remarkably safe compared to similar and larger international multicultural cities in both Canada & abroad, so I have little fear of any of the neighbourhoods (I've also lived in Hamilton & Toronto over the years and visited Washington, New York, Pittsburgh, Richmond and others so to see the sliding scales of comparison has been helpful). Rental rates are also remarkably affordable in Montreal - a delight I am pleased to discover! I doubt our home selling in Ontario will coincide with moving day in Montreal, but, from what I've seen so far, the options are not disappointing even when not arriving in peak season.

The sole criteria that will therefore determine our settling location will be schools for my boys. My youngest son will be in elementary school for quite some time, my older boy will be moving to secondary within 2 years of our move. With his learning disability, English core is the only option for him. For my younger son, he has been quite intrigued by the possibility of bilingual education but is not enthused at the struggle a full immersion day might bring (in his words: that's like changing my whole life in one day mom!)

So, now you've read my tale, what would be your recommendations?

Je vous remercie en avance pour votre aide,
Chantal

Heres your two choices for the English language public sector in Montreal,
Lester B Pierson School Board
LBPSB

English Montreal School Board
English Montreal School Board

If you plan on staying in Quebec for some time it would be in the kids best interest to ultimately become fully functional in French,
Some level of French immersion may be unavoidable as even the English schools can get rather intense in the content of French in their curriculum
Welcome to the forum and good luck

I think you'll find most of the English primary/secondary education in Montreal is excellent - I would recommend sticking to areas near McGill University, as that is where you will have the best access to support for your son's disability (this is where the English-language university specialists are). I am in a more rural location of Quebec and my son has problems with speech - it's been very difficult finding access to therapy in English. If I could pick up and move tomorrow, I would move near McGill just for that. Good luck.

Thanks jambo101 for your reply. I'm certain we're going to be in the EMSB, and ultimately, it is my goal they be fully bilingual as well. Overall I'm looking for individual school recommendations.

Some of the older posts outline some very poor schools (both economically and quality wise) that one poster said 'no self respecting parent would ever send their kids there' despite the neighbourhoods being good.

Thank you too aliss2, for your reply. I love the idea of my sons being near me at McGill for all the reasons you've stated, but there are some pretty awful reviews on yelp about the FACE schools near McGill.

Any further thoughts?

You might want to ask "Montreal Moms" Facebook group, as most women there send their kids to English school for better reviews. We're in the Riverside district (about an hour south) so I can't speak details for Montreal itself.

Singlemom,

My Kids go to Riverview as I live in nun's island and busing is available only for Riverview and Verdun elementary. I chose riverview because its immersion program and found is little better than Verdun Elementary. But if you will be living is city I would suggest you to do some more reaserach on the schools like

Elizabeth Ballantyne
Hampstead Elementary
Carlyle School

I believe these schools are full english schools with French as second language subject.

Take a look at the news regarding Carlyle. http://www.west-end-times.com/index....igious-status/

You'd probably get better info from the Toronto section than the Montreal section.
