I would agree given my 1200 sq ft house that is $820 a month which includes a 30 yr mortgage and all property taxes. Similar houses for rent I've seen in the $1200 range.

Well we talked to a friend of my wife and her husband makes 75k with a takehome of about 52k so that has cleared quite a bit up as well.

Montreal has the cheapest housing compared to other big cities in Canada. Try Toronto or Vancouver.

Right. In Canada. Much of the U.S. market is much more reasonable than Montreal real estate. The house that I own in Massachusetts, depending on where you put it in Montreal, could be more than a million dollars. We paid less than half of that.

Even the house that we owned in Connecticut would cost almost twice here what we paid for it there.

The Montreal real estate market saw a boom. Right before I left 10 years ago, my apartment in Westmount was going condo. The price for my one-bedroom unit was $375,000. (I didn't buy it; someone else did.) They sold it a few years ago for $550,000.

Regarding food and groceries:

I just wanted to say that Montreal may not have 31 different flavours of Jet Puf marshamallow spread, but it is one of the best fine food cities on the continent. There is tons of good and fine stuff available there, in grocery stores, markets and restaurants.
