Hi Guys!
I need your help
I’m European and I just got a job offer from a company in Montreal. they offer me 70k/year.
I’m alone without kids.
Since I’m not aware of the Canadian Market, could you help me founding out if it is a good offer,
How much amount that I can get after the tax deduction?
How is the everage cost to rent an apartment in montreal? Is is possible to rend it already with furniture?
Considering the basic costs (rent, food, monthly pass, internet, etc), how much do you think I will be able to save for myself (for entertainment & savings).

Thanks so much, all the hints will be appreciated!

$70K is pretty good money in my estimation, you will easily be able to acquire an apartment in or around the downtown area, furnished apartments can be had
Expect taxes to run around 30-35%
rent, could run $1000-$3000 depending on where and how luxurious
food, depending on whether you cook or you eat at restaurants $100-$200
monthly bus pass,$75 per month
internet,+ Cable tv $85 per month.
For prices of just about everything check out Craigslist
craigslist: montreal classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

Heres a map so you know where the neighborhoods are.

70 thousand is a good wage. The cost of living in Montreal is considered to be lower than average, certainly lower than most of Canada, but the quality of life is quite high. I'd be quite comfortable living in Montreal with that wage. I'd also say that the rent estimation given by Jambo is a little high, you can get a decent apartment for even as low as 500$ a month, but the numbers he gave you were for someone earning around your wage who wants to live well.

I was thinking of some of the high rise complexes downtown that usually start around $1K..Bachelor pads for $500 while not super abundant can be acquired in communities outside of downtown areas like Verdun,St Henri,Pte St Charles.Plateau,Mount Royal.
If MaryKing can give us the location of her potential job we could refine our suggestions as to where to live..

In the plateau you can get a very decent pad for one person at 750-1000$ a month depending how snazzy you want it. Anywhere in the plateau you could bike/bus/subway to downtown core in 15-25 minutes.

In my opinion the Plateau is fairly utopic in every respect, particularly if you embrace city-life (and it's cheaper than downtown)

Best of luck!

ps:. at 70 000$ for one person, you'll live VERY well in Montreal

He means (close to)perfection, and I agree with leftimage. The plateau is for me what an ideal neighbourhood should look like. It has everything within walking distance, it's trendy, artistic, dense, etc.

If you're looking for a big house with a two car garage and big box stores, you won't find that in the Plateau; basically the Plateau IMO is not just a neighbourhood in MTL, it's THE neighbourhood, if you know what I mean, but it depends on what you like, Montreal has something for everyone.

Also check out the Mile-end, it's pretty cool.

What are you looking for in particular?
