Does Longueuil have its own culture and identity or is it regarded as a suburb of Montreal?

God bless.

Pretty much a suburb of Montreal. It is right across the river from downtown and a lot closer to downtown than many part of the Ville de Montréal (city proper). It also is on the city's Métro line.

It does have a special place in Quebec lore because in this part of the world a mullet is known as a "coupe Longueuil".

If you are wondering how its pronounced =
Longay

While the city is considered a southshore suburb it does have some historical significance..

Roughly. It's two syllables, Lon-Gueuil, and that last syllable involves sounds that we don't really have in English that are hard to approximate.

Press the pronunciation button to hear it!

Google Translate

It's pretty much your standard sprawlsville.

For some one unfamiliar with the name Longay i think is very close, much better than Longwail.

I live right next door to Longueuil.

It is often a bit of a misunderstood area by people who are not from there. It tends to be looked down on a bit.

There is a historical downtown (Vieux-Longueuil centered on Rue Saint-Charles) area that is worth a visit.

It was mostly built between the 1940s and 1980s, with the odd older building. Most of it has sidewalks, and the transit system is pretty good for a suburb. It is, generally speaking, a working-class area.

There's also an expression in Quebec: "Coupe Longueuil" = Mullet

Even Longueuil isn’t immune from the language wars.

How many of the “French only” folks are multilingual?
