You might want to be more specific as to what type of entertainment you are looking for. Baie-Saint-Paul (~1hr from QC) is a good-looking village with a bunch of art galleries and a few nice restaurants.. it does have a few bars but nobody goes there for the nightlife. Except for the casino, La Malbaie and Clermont are even quieter. Not sure what your references are but the comparables to Charlevoix towns (not scenery) in the US Northeast are some of the smaller places like Bar Harbor, ME, Newcastle, ME, Windham, NY.. maybe Great Barrington, MA (or a less upscale Lenox).. small arts towns but none of the party scene associated with beach or ski resorts.

Well, I plan on spending the weekdays doing outdoor activities and adventures, and then at night drive to Quebec City, which I hear is not that far. On the Weekend and the last leg of my trip, I am going to drive down and stay in Montreal.

Some guidelines --

From Baie-St-Paul to QC: a bit over 1hr
From Les Éboulements/St-Joseph-de-la-Rive to QC: around 1h30
From La Malbaie/Clermont/Saint-Irénée to QC: around 2hrs
From Saint-Siméon to QC: ~2h30

It's a nice drive.

I dont mind the drive as long as it is scenic, and I believe it is very scenic. Anyways do you have any suggestions as to what hotel to stay? The only resort I have found is the Fairmont Michelieu. Is there any other like it in that area?

Keep in mind it is not freeway driving. It's not a cowpath either but the highway is a two lane - a good two lane but still two lane. Especially late at night there can be deer and moose, so if you've been partying...

No worries, I never drink too much. But then again, what are the drinking and driving laws like? Are they similar? Is it common to run across checkpoints in that region?

Hotels:

The Manoir Richelieu (Fairmont) is by far the largest resort in the area. There is a new hotel called La Ferme in Baie-Saint-Paul that's affiliated with Le Massif (the region's ski resort), it has 145 rooms according to their website. I believe it opened last year. Here's a more complete list:

Charlevoix Hotels and Motels

Route 362 from Baie-Saint-Paul to La Malbaie is by far the most scenic of the region. Route 138 from Baie-Saint-Paul to Quebec City has a few nice overlooks with a lot of nothing in between.

The DUI threshold is the same in Quebec as everywhere in the US (0.08 BAC). Not sure what the penalty would be for you as a (I assume) NJ driver's license holder -- if you were a NY license holder any violation would be recorded as if it had happened in NY.

As for checkpoints, I guess "common" is relative. They are more common early in the summer and in December.

I checked out that list. Thanks

then I went to expedia, and hotwire, and many of those hotels are booked on the days I am looking for. I need to ask, is the summer time peak season for vacation up there?

I don't know what it's like in NY, but if you're caught over the limit in Quebec, your car is immediately impounded.
Just something to keep in mind.

Most Quebecers take vacations in the summer. There's the infamous "construction holiday", where all workers related to construction take vacation at the same time, from plumbers to electricians. It's a strange and uniquely Quebec thing in the last two weeks of July. Some say it's about 40% of the entire workforce, because nothing gets done, anyway. It's party time.
Many people do take vacation in the winter, but they don't stay here....they head off to the sun and sand in Cuba.
