I might have a chance to come to the Bay Area in late March. I've always wanted to see the whales migrating and thought this trip might be a good chance to do so.

Have any of you had a really great whale watching experience in Northern California at that time of year? If so, where was it?

I'd be coming into SFO for an event on Sunday, the 23rd, and could arrange to be there for 3 days before and/or 4 days after. I wouldn't mind driving a half-day or so to maximize whale sighting possibilities. Would it be worth it to drive up to Mendocino/Fort Bragg? Is it better to stick around Monterey? And are there any whale watching boat trip companies you've had great experiences with?

Any advice or referrals would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Here are a couple of good resources with current sightings. I would call them about late March. But I'm pretty sure you will be able to find some whales to see. Just be careful on the day you go. If the waves are really large that day I recommend waiting. We've gone when the waves were huge and everyone on the boat was getting sick.

i sailed the california coast on coast guard cutters for 5 years, and by far the best spot for whale watching i could recommend would be the farallon islands (we would replinish the scientist's station a couple times per year)
