There are Gangs everywhere in CA. (Yes there are small pockets of gangs in Hollister, Gilroy and Morgan Hill, Monterey and most likely Carmel too.) Don't be fooled, but understand that they are not really an issue except maybe in Salinas as of lately. Gangs are not like the movies anymore. They also are not going to be a problem unless you live in a low income area. I was scared when I first moved here as well, but you really don't need to worry unless you think being in a gang would be appealing to your children.

Regarding the commute to Hollister from Monterey it will be 45 minutes, from Carmel about an hour with no traffic. Both are beautiful places to live, but be prepared for cold temps and lots of fog. Why do you not want to consider Hollister? Traffic To Monterey can be bad on 101 south if there is an accident. It's also not the safest part of 101. They call it 'blood alley' for a reason.

I love Carmel and Monterey, but Hollister is a great little town. You'll also get way more for your money. In Carmel, you'll be lucky to live in an apartment for a 4 bedroom house in Hollister. Monterey and Carmel are also very touristy. I love going to the beach on the weekends, but I'm not sure I'd want to live there.
