We want to take a family train trip out west, but there doesn't seem to be any car rental places from our last Amtrack stop in Shelby. We need to find out how to go from Shelby to Alberta Canada....does anyone know if there are any shuttles up to to border or how much a taxi would cost? Thank you.

Shelby is a small town. I'd be VERY surprised if there was a shuttle to the border. I'd be equally surprised if there was taxi service.

You might consider getting off the train in Havre. With a population of 10k, it is much more likely to have a car rental service.

I would take Amtrak to Fargo, ND. and take the I 29 to Canada 75 highway to Winnipeg, Manitoba route. Very well traveled and I'm sure has bus service between the two. Take Via Rail the rest of the way and live in luxury compared to the Empire Builder. Scenery is about the same but Alberta has higher peaks that will blow your mind away. You'll miss Montana, but you said you want to go to Alberta. Most Americans don't know where the northern Rockies are, they think it's Montana. You'll have a story to tell when you come back from vacation and you go this route.

Occurs to me that since there's transport from Shelby to Sweetgrass -- chances are there's also transport from Sweetgrass to points north, such as Calgary. Anyone know offhand??

Here's a useful site for tourists entering Alberta:
Alberta Tourist Information
Unfortunately the link to the Alberta transportation site goes to a dead page and offhand I couldn't find the same info there, but this site might be of some use:
Alberta - Local Transportation

.

I've taken a bus several times from Calgary to Great Falls and back, the first time around Christmas, 1979 and the last time was the summer of 2004. We would change buses at the border crossings in each direction after passing through Customs. It came to my attention that the bus service was cut in the mid-'00s, leaving a gap between Lethbridge and Sweetgrass, which is not surprising because everytime I rode it, as soon as we were south of Lethbridge, there were maybe five of us on the bus for the remainder of the trip to Great Falls.

Hmm. While I was digging around I'd swear I saw some long-distance bus service listed from Great Falls to Calgary, but I don't know how current the info was. <goes off, roots around again>

Here's a charter van service that serves Alberta and the Park area, including Great Falls:
Airport Shuttle Express
Another article that mentions this same service:
Bus Trips From Calgary to Great Falls | Trails.com
(somehow the Greyhound route from Great Falls to Calgary via Seattle lacks all appeal...)

In-state MT bus service:
Locations in Montana - Rimrock Trailways (http://www.rimrocktrailways.com/locations.asp?state=MT - broken link)
