I inherited some mineral rights in gas/coal/oil area of Montana. Over the last 35 years, it has been leased out to gas exploration companies, but they just used it as a tax right off and didn't seriously do anything. I'm being patient. As the I Ching says, perseverance furthers.

I'm sure some of it is, but it can't all be Federal. The Bakken spans out to a sizeable chunk of land. It's not quite 1/4th of Montana, but it's close. I think what you're thinking about is how mineral rights are handled in Montana for land owners. I know there is something different about it, but I'm not sure what that difference is.

so owning property and owning mineral rights to that property are two different things in Montana?

It can be.
I inherited part of the mineral rights (along with my siblings and cousins) to our grandfather's claims. He was a prospector and homesteader. The surface rights are owned by other people now, but we still have the mineral rights.

Very much so. In town or in a comprehensive planning zone it really wouldn't make a lot of difference, but say you bought 1000 acres. You would want to make sure you picked up the mineral rights along with the property, or a few years down the line you'll be crying in your Post Toasties when somebody else sets up a drilling rig on your property and they reap the benefits.

Coffee's on.

How come everybody is so quiet? It's time to get up and get ready for the "Significant Snow Event". That's what NWS is calling it. They're not quite saying "Snow Storm". I think today they are going to change their tune. This one looks like it's going to sneak up on us.

My weather station display is showing little speckled dots under the clouds. That's never good.

Wake up, it's time for some eggs and sausage.

Happy Birthday Happiness Is.

Father's day baby myself, (my parents got a steak dinner out of that one , ), but both my sister and sister in law are 28 Dec. Tough on family as you not only have to spend too much on Christmas, you have to spend more money you don't have on birthdays

Still, All the best on your day

Thanks!

My family forgot my birthday completely when I was 16. When dinner time came around, I asked my parents, "Are we going to have a cake or anything" and they said, "What for?"... No card, no gift, no cake, they totally forgot my birthday. Being the youngest of 7, I was already invisible with so much already going on with all the other kids. I can relate to "Kevin in Home Alone". Big families, it's easy for some of the kids to be overlooked.
