I've had so many rides, I know all the paramedics and EMT's by first name.

Coffee's on. Mixing some blueberry pancakes and bacon.

Too far away and I can't be gone overnight. But my mom went (he was her mom's sister's husband) as she's only a couple hours away.

Tellya, he looked durn good for 97. Hardly a wrinkle to be seen.

Not too unusual for a computer to skip a day; happens when something is running at midnight that interferes with the clock incrementing. First time I ever saw that was with a Mahjong game for DOS. I expect there's some internal housekeeping Windows does that has a bug in it that interferes with the system clock. (This box doesn't have the bug in the timer chip that triggers the 47-day rollover bug in Windows, so that's not it.)

How old is Dink? (that's its name!!) Depends which part you're lookin' at. The hard disks are 5, 8, and 11, the main innards are 13, and the case and some odd parts left from its original incarnation will be 17 in May. Just had to replace the power supply, at age 15 (got fried by giant electrical surge that blew through two layers of protection).

That's all years, not months.

And it's got an almost-twin brother "Gremlin" that's my media machine.

I've had a couple newer ones that croaked, and if I'd ever get around to finishing up the "new" (7 yrs now I think) system around that nice industrial motherboard I got off eBay.... but these old farts just keep chugging along (they're never turned off) so I'm not real motivated.

Tho I gotta do something about the disk space crunch, soon. I think I have 3 million files on this box now.

I like talking to those old farts. They've seen so much and you can learn so much.

Yesterday I sat down and had lunch with a guy that is 88. He's planning on going in for back surgery at that age. I asked him if it's worth it. He said, "I've got too much to see yet, gotta be able to walk to see it."

This is a guy that road up the Alaska Highway on a 1930 something Harley when the Harley was brand new. ex POW that escaped with 3 other guys. He chats with the other 3 at least weekly. Yeah, all 4 are still kicking.

He's outlived 2 of his 4 boys.

Speaking of computers skipping a day. I send in reports to an outfit every day. Yesterday, about 5PM, I went to send in a report. Got an error message that said "You cannot send in reports before 8am". So I double checked my data entry and everything was fine. Looked at the computer clock and it said "3am". hahaha That's on a laptop that is always fired up.

You're getting good milage out of those power supplies Rez. Must keep your house nice and cool. Onboard the ships I rode, we had computers in the cool room and computers out in the main space. Main space power supplies would last 5 years, tops. In the cool room they would last over 10 years.

Not really... often over 90F in my house in summer. Tho the computer has an extra intake fan, plus its own external fan for when it gets too hot, so running temp doesn't go up much. I don't even have that. The computers live better than I do.

Reason it lasted so long was I bought a server-class power supply in the first place. Well worth the extra $15 (at the time there was a choice of ONE in a 300W PSU for PCs, and $50 was a stiff price). Prolly replaced the fan 3 or 4 times, but that's no big deal. I just bought a new PSU from the same manufacturer -- TOPower is still in business, and the new one is identical quality to the old one. Everything is thick, heavy, and solid. 400W this time for about $70. Prolly last 20 years. Now if I'd get around to putting it in... I hate opening Dink up, it's like kudzu in there.

Simple way to judge quality of PSUs: weight. Anything under 3 or 4 pounds is crap. (I've seen 'em as light as 12 ounces.) Good rails, heatsink, wires, and capacitors all weigh more than cheap junk. It's really that simple. Next criterion is number of wires sticking out of it. You want more and thicker. If you drop it on your foot and break your whole leg, it's a good one.

Truth... Here's a scary stat: once today's oldest generation is gone, 98% of all Americans will not only have never lived on a farm, they won't even have a living grandparent who did (and I've found it makes a big difference in what kids really understand, that learning from grandparents). Is it any wonder agriculture interests are being killed off right and left? Not enough people left who understand where our food comes from, let alone how to produce it!

I know exactly what you are saying Rez. I grew up on the farm, crop rotation, replacing nutrients naturally is the key. You plant to make the ground better, not the pocket book.

There's a kid up here that inherited a place. His idea of farming is to chase the stock market. He thinks if corn is looking good for prices next year, that's what he's going to plant. No regard for soil. He figures he can correct it with spray and it'll be all better. Then he wonders why his place produces like crap. He blames it on the soil. He's right, the soil is bad, but he made it bad.
