WHY THEY WERE ARRESTED

John Dilliard, Alex Knight and Marsh Martin were arrested at Poplin, 14 miles west of Dexter, and lodged in jail at Bloomfield. They are charged with passing a lot of spurious money on citizens of Stoddard county. It is said they worked off canceled Tennessee notes. The holes punched in the notes in cancellation had been neatly covered by scraps of a similar bill. The men arrested are from El Dorado, Ill, and say they got the money at Nashville, Tenn.

GENTRY STORE ROBBED

The Ray Drug Store at Gentry was broken into last Thursday night, and Friday the Strumpfer bloodhounds from Savannah were called to the scene of the robbery.
It was hard to estimate the amount that had been taken from the store, as it included money, candy, cigarettes, tobacco and some jewelry, which was in the stock. The dogs took a trail which led to a house in Gentry, but nothing was found when the officers searched the premises, with the permission of the owner, and no arrests were made.
Sheriff Paul Brown and Prosecuting Attorney George P. Adams were in Gentry all of Friday morning assisting in the search for the culprits.

THIEVES AT WORK IN BONNE TERRE CEMETERY

Vandals have been operating in the St. Joe Lead Company cemetery, taking the lead and other material used at the base of tombstones and monuments which solidifies the stones upright and selling the metal to junk dealers. Many of the monuments are now in a falling position while some are down.
The thieves and destroyers are known and when apprehended will no doubt pay dearly for their deeds.

Kansas City Journal Jan. 10, 1898

Independence, Kas., Jan. 9.---Harry Siegel and Grace Clark were brought here and placed in the county jail last night by W.O. McIntosh, deputy sheriff. They are charged with robbing Dr. Campbell, of Cherryvale, of $712, and there is very strong evidence against them. It seems that Dr. Campbell and his wife were afraid of banks and kept their money hid around the house.
On the 17th of last August, when both were away from home during the evening, the house was broken into and $712 in money taken. Beds were cut open and every place where money could be hidden was searched. McIntosh was put to work on the case, but the guilty parties had left no trace behind them.
Finally he got on the right track and afterwards arrested Harry Siegel.
He recovered $412 of the stolen money, part of which was found in the house occupied by Grace Clark in Springfield, Mo. She was closely watched in the hopes of securing the remaining $300 but was finally arrested as an accomplice. Siegel was serving a sentence in jail at Springfield, Mo., when he broke out and committed the Cherryvale robbery and the Missouri authorities made him serve out his sentence there before he could be brought here.
Clark and Siegel will have their preliminary tomorrow.
