Norvill, a discharged convict, shot J. Rayburn, who was in charge of the penitentiary dining room, last week.
Norvill had broken some knives and forks and Rayburn had him tied to a post as punishment. On the evening of his discharge, Norvill bought an old single-barrel shotgun for fifty cents and secreted himself near the Rayburn residence.
While Mr. Rayburn was leaving his gate on the way to the penitentiary he was shot by Norvill, who was across the street. Rayburn will recover. Norvill was captured.

Thieves stole about $15 worth of wash off Mrs. Joe Mirgaux's wash line at Ancell, and Mrs. Mirgaux is mighty mad about it. Robbery and stealing is getting to be something fierce around here of late.

CAUGHT BY DECOY LETTERS

In Willis F. Neff, a railway mail clerk on the Kansas City and Wellington Railroad, who was arrested Friday night at Wellington, Kan., by Post Office Inspectors McKee and Stice, the postal authorities believe they have the man who is responsible for robberies of mail which have occurred at frequent intervals on that route for the last seven months. He has been a clerk for fifteen years.

Kansas City, Jun 3.--- Prosecuting Attorney Charles C. Keith of Lafayette county, early today, ordered the release of Jack Dovichi, who has been held here in the connection with the killing of a deputy sheriff of Lafayette county on May 4.
Prosecutor Keith said that the person has established perfect alibi. Sylvester Koel, in jail on a similar charge, is still being held.

CLARK AND JONES HANGED

Kansas City, Mo., Jun 30.--- Harry Jones and William C. Ricksher, alias John Clark, who murdered Madame Wright on September 9, 1893, suffered death on the gallows yesterday.
With a smile on his lips Jones was hanged inside the walls of the Independence jail at 9:06 a.m.
Clark was hanged in the county jail in this city at 11:10.
His neck was broken and he was declared dead in seven and a half minutes. Like Jones he died bravely but his composure came from the determination to endure the ordeal without flinching. His last words uttered in a trembling voice were: " May my God forgive me."
A voice from one of the spectators responded solemnly: " Amen."

Alva Wheeler was fined $100 by Judge Utz Wednesday for having a still in his possession.


Harry Davis, who claims St. Joseph and 616 Francis street as his home, but who is not known by the police here, is under arrest at Kansas City for fatally shooting Clement Mead, a grocer at that place.


Diamonds of the value of $600 were stolen from the home of Mrs. Bertha Barryman, 2624 Lafayette, Thursday.


Vernon McCombs, under sentence of five years for first degree robbery, was granted an appeal by Judge Utz Tuesday and furnished a bond of $5,000.

Irvine C. Inks, of the Missouri Bottom, was arrested and examined last Saturday upon indictment for disturbing religious worship, and required to give a bond of $200 for his appearance at Circuit Court to answer to the charge.

FORMER BANKER ARRESTED

St. Joseph, Mo., Feb 18.--- Louis L. Strong, former cashier of the Merchant's Bank, and who has lately been employed as a deputy in the office of City Assessor Case, was arrested today on a warrant charging him with having obtained $126 from Dr. H.A. Walker, the county jail physician, by false pretenses. He was committed to jail. Strong is the son of the late Col. John Strong, formerly general counsel of the Burlington Railway. He inherited a fortune which he squandered.
