Mexico Missouri Message April 18, 1918

ARRESTED ST. LOUIS MAN

Constable W.R. Dudley, H.E. Carr and Russell Dye took into custody at Rush Hill last week a suspicious character and brought him to Mexico. The man arrested said his name was Henry Prol, and claimed to be a Dane. He was accused of trying to get into William Mullett's house, near Rush Hill.

HELD UP AND ROBBED

J.H. Rodden, a young man in the employ of a farmer living about 10 miles southeast of Jasper, was held up by a lone highwayman last Saturday evening and relieved of $18.65 of his employer's money.

POLLARD GUILTY OF SELLING LIQUOR

Bruce Pollard was found guilty in circuit court late yesterday afternoon in selling intoxicating liquors and was fined $100. The jury was out half an hour on the case returning a verdict shortly before 6 o'clock. Evidence disclosed that Pollard had sold 10 gallons of whisky to a negro for $200.

MAN IS ROBBED AND KILLED

Kansas City.---The body of a man believed to be Chancie Courtney of Wren, Ohio, was found in a clump of willows near the river front. His skull had been fractured and his pockets turned out and shoes missing. Letters on him gave clues to his identity. The police believe he was murdered by tramps while resisting being robbed. He was about 30 years old and had been dead about a week.

INOFFENSIVE MAN WOUNDED

Gustave Bock, an old bachelor living in a hut on the outskirts of Hermann, shot an aged and inoffensive man named Carl Hell in the back while the latter was working in his garden, inflicting, it is thought, a fatal wound. Sheriff Mumbrauer and Constable Shilbach, assisted by a posse, went to arrest Bock, who opened fire on them with a musket at close range, but was finally overpowered and lodged in jail. Bock is thought to be demented.

Eight years ago George Cole, then known as Walter Topey, was sent to the Ohio penitentiary for pocket picking but made his escape. A few days ago Cole and his wife were arrested at Kansas City on vagrancy charges.

At a camp meeting which is being held at Gilmore, St. Charles county, by the colored Baptists, Mrs. Carolina Simms and George Wallace became involved in a quarrel over the proceeds of the lemonade stand. The Simms woman secured a razor and went after Wallace. Rev. Charles Long, of O'Fallon, interfered and was fatally cut.

Chariton Courier July 12, 1879 Pg3

A fatal shooting affray occurred in Glasgow last Wednesday which resulted in the death of a man named William Pierce, a laborer engaged on the Chicago & Alton railroad, by John Conners, also a laborer on the same road.
The murdered man made no defense for his life, and expired soon after receiving the wound. The cause which prompted Conners to commit the deed, was a previous threat by Pierce of taking Conners' life. Conners was arrested and upon his attorney giving notice that he would waive a preliminary examination was sent to jail at Fayette where he will await his trial of the next term of the circuit court.

TRAIN ROBBERS SENTENCED

At Moberly, Tom ? and Emmet Taggergreen, two of the men indicted for robbing the Chicago & Alton Wabash railroad at Clark's switch, some time since, were each sentenced to two years in the penitentiary.





In November 1922, Constable Max Stubblefield was killed by Ben Wade in Pemiscot County when he led a prohibition raid on Wade's grocery store. Wade was wounded by two other officers.

Sedalia, Mo.---Arrested upon allegations that he had declared he would not comply with the daylight-saving law or other " useless " government regulations, John Schull was convicted and sentenced to 3 months in jail and fined $100.

Private John White of Mexico Missouri shot and killed Private Dock Pinkard at Camp Upton New York during a quarrel in 1918. They were one of the first contingent of negro soldiers.

Taney County Republican May 24, 1906

Lewis Brown, 10 years old, held up and robbed another boy in St. Louis the other day, taking his watch. He says he did it for a joke and because another boy told him to. He was taken into custody, and seemed to take that too as a joke. He is said to be the youngest person ever taken into custody for that type of offense.

ARRESTED FOR STEALING DOG

Will Davis, Fred Davis and Ace Lawson of Wanamaker neighborhood were arrested last Saturday by Deputy Sheriff John Higgins for stealing a valuable dog owned by a Mr. Kiefer, east of Miami. The men were bound over to the November term of criminal court.
