people call it the wilderness tax. As if missoula is the only place in the world with a good wilderness surrounding it. anyway, yeah, the cost of living is comparably the same as Denver on the general average and salaries are about 15-25% lower. Plus the economy is pretty streamlined to the hospitals and the university. you can live here but it will be a sacrifice, unless you bring plenty of money or your own business.

We will be leaving next Sunday to move to Missoula. I am transferring with my government job so not worried about a pay cut. But after talking to a friend that moved up last month, groceries are higher for sure, rentals are running close, but gas is averaging .50 a gallon less in Missoula than here in southern Colorado. So the way I see it, we will pay more for some things, less for others and nearly the same for yet others. So, for us, it is worth the move. We cant wait to get there!!

transfering a government job is definitely one of the better ways to make it happen. Buckle down for long winters and everything else should fall in place pretty good for ya. Have fun.

Hope you enjoy it here, markge65! It will be cold and gray at first but late spring and summer will make it worthwhile. :-D Best of luck to you.

Well we have been here just over a week and LOVE it! And as for cold......not yet. It is still March and I love the fact that its been in the 30s to near 60. As for what we have found on the cost of living issues....it is about what we expecte3d and I stated in the post I wrote about a week before me got here. Groceries are a bit higher than in Colorado. Milk for example is almost a dollar a gallon more here. We found a great place to rent and it may be just a little higher priced than the same type of place in Colorado, but nothing major. And yes.....gas is still running 40-50 cents a gallon cheaper here in Missoula. Again......we Love it here and will trade the slight price increases overall for the much better scenery, much nicer people, more seasonable weather, ect. etc. ect.
