My husband and I are looking to move to the Missoula area, from Maine, for work & school (is that really the only law school in the state?). We would like to live within about 1/2 an hours drive but would prefer to have a chunk of land (at least 2 acres) that we can call our own. Any suggestions of towns/cities to look at???

I don't know what lower cost is to you but it's easy to google realtors in the area and look at the properties on the various websites. You may want to store your stuff and rent a cheap motel while your looking for the right place. I think that the title of your post is a bit of an oxymoron these days.
