My family will be moving to MN this summer. My husband will be working at the University of Minnesota- St.Paul Campus and I'll be working in Golden Valley. I'd actually rather be a bit closer to the St. Paul Campus because of his schedule. I'm looking for suggestions of a place to live inbetween? We have 2 school age children so school district is important. We'd also love to live near parks, walking trails etc. Suggestions?

I would start looking in the Eagan area, in the 196 schools-Eagan is a part of 3 different districts so you will have to be careful of that. It is a quick hop up 35E to the St. Paul Campus and not too bad of a drive to Golden Valley.

Eagan has great parks, walking trails, excellent schools and is convenient to pretty much everything.

I work very near the St Paul campus. We looked into Eagan, but it's too far. Instead we bought a place in Roseville and it's great.

Eagan to the StP campus is farther than you may think. Taking I-35E, you have to go thru StP via Ayd Mill Road, then all the way north on Snelling. It can be very slow.

We moved to MN about 2 years ago... My favorite way to start searching for a place to live (since I too have children) is by starting to look at how well the school districts are doing. A great website that I use frequently is SchoolDataDirect - State Education Data, School District Data, School Data.
Once I have zeroed in on a few surrounding school districts, then I look at how far the commute would be for my husband. (Who's working.) Then, I look up the cites individually to read about them.

Default more info about Roseville

Thanks so much for the information. Globe199- you said you like Roseville? It would definately be a great location. I have read on other threads that Roseville may be ging "downhill". But you seems happy with your choice. Any comments about that? Neighborhoods you would recommend?

Where did you read it's going downhill? I haven't noticed that or even heard it. I sure as heck hope not!

Seriously, though, there will be some turnover in the area due to the aging population. It has the highest number of seniors per capita anywhere in the Metro, I believe. What exactly that will mean, I don't know.

Tyrol Hills would a perfect location for your family - gentle rolling hills with huge trees, big lawns and yards and wonderful parks.

Your only 10 minutes to downtown Minneapolis and 20 minutes to St Paul during rush hour. Tyrol Hills is really close to everything in the Twin Cities.

Schools are some of the best in the state "Hopkins school district" and there is a excellent private school in the neighborhood.

Others have loved Tyrol for years and this idyllic location comes with fairly high home prices - the least expensive homes are $350k, however I know there are some REO bargains currently available.

Good Luck and I hope you at least visit Tyrol Hills!

Depending on your price range, yes, Tyrol is exceptional. It's very spendy though.

Good school districts are decided by what an individual sees as important. Roseville has a great reputation as a majority save the opinion of one or two people on this forum. Falcon Heights, south of Larpenteur is an exceptional area. Its borders on the N and S are Larpenteur and Hoyt. E and W are Hamline and Snelling. Best of luck and welcome to MN! This would be very convenient to the U and you can get to GV within a half hour.

Have you considered Saint Anthony Village? It is just west of Roseville, and North of Falcon Heights...very good school (I have two children) and very close to everything.
