Me and my gf are moving to the cities for grad school and work. I'll be going to the U (minneapolis campus) and she has a job in northern eagan (close to 494 and 35 E). She is driving and I'll probably be taking the bus. I was just looking for suggestions on locations.

Richfield would probably be the best of the ones you listed but I would probably look more on the St Paul side.

I would say with gas prices going up and up, Eagan. There is a large bus transit center there, plenty of nice rentals and her commute would be a mile or so. Depending on what your hours are she could drop you at the transit station before going to work.

St Paul: Highland Park or Mac Groveland. Great bus service directly to campus for you, and a hop & a skip down 35E for her (10 min. tops).

I moved to Eagan from another state about a year ago. My advice: don't move to Eagan. Eagan is OK if you are looking for family neighborhoods where everything is closed at 8pm and you have to drive to anything of interest. Personally I am really tired of Eagan, its just so boring.

I think we are going to look into Highland Park. I'm assuming I can park at Fort Snelling and take the light rail in? My gf's commute would be very short from there so that's good.

The lightrail doesn't go to the U of M, only to Downtown Minneapolis. You would be better off finding a bus to the U from where ever you end up living.

The Cedar-Riverside stop on the light rail will take you a few blocks away from the west bank campus.
I would recommend finding a good place in between school and work. Try south Minneapolis. I take classes at the U of M west bank and work in Eagan so buying a home in south Minneapolis was the logical choice. Hopping on Cedar avenue will take me to either location in less than 20 minutes.

A lot of people use the light rail to commute to the U. It requires a simple transfer to the 50 or the 16 at the Metrodome stop, for the remaining 3 minutes of your commute, and you'll be in the heart of the U. In the morning, connecting busses run every 4 minutes or so.
