My daughter, who is an engineering student, will be going on coop for four months next fall in the twin cities, and then again the following summer. The company she will be working at is located in West Saint Paul, between Southview Country Club and Gladstone Park. Questions:

1) What would be some good neighborhoods to live in that are not too far away?

2) How much would you expect to pay for rent on a short term lease?

3) What to do about transportation? Is public transportation an option? How much of a hassle is it to drive, and find parking?

Will she have a car at all? There won't be any rentals right by the company, that is mostly a single family home with some VERY high end condos thrown in. There are some nicer apartment places along highway 110 and Deleware Ave (I can't remember the name). There are also several in Inver Grove Heights and Eagan that would be very easy drives. West St. Paul is suburb of St. Paul, very residential. There are some apartments around Robert Street but you probably want to stay away from most of those.

There are buses that run but probably not so much to her office area.

I can't help you out much with rent prices though.

1. If you want a fancy area, Highland Park in Saint Paul is great. There should be some rentals in West St. Paul and the West side (south of the Mississippi). Downtown is safe and convenient.
2. Beyond me
3. There are a couple bus lines going out towards that area. Robert Street would be the most major of those, and would come from Downtown Saint Paul. Parking is plentiful, and would be less cumbersome than transit in that area. A cost v. convenience question there.
Hopefully someone can fill you in more.

I was told the area around Macalester College is very nice and would be a great place to live for a young single woman. How long would it take to drive back and forth every day from there?

10 minutes-it is just across the river. If she will have a car that opens her choices quite a bit. Anywhere around St. Thomas, Macalester or Hamline would be good. There are some really cute apartments on Cleveland Ave that would be good for her. They are brick, not quite row houses but similar feel. She could be to West St. Paul in no time from there. She would probably have more luck finding people her age around the colleges then living in West St. Paul/Mendota Heights area.

Having a car is an option. There are cities where you're better off not having a car. Just wasn't sure if this is one of those cities.

Most people have cars here. The cities are actually fairly easy to navigate and drive in, unlike places like Boston or New York. She will have off street parking at most apartments.

You might want to contact some of the local colleges and see if there are any professors going on sabbatical looking for short term renters.

The area around Macalester is wonderful. Very residential and pedestrian friendly. Summit Avenue is the premiere residential street of Saint Paul. More expensive than West St. Paul, but the experience would be worth it, figuring the short-term nature of the move. Very safe area and she would be around a very young and highly educated crowd. A car would be a good idea (esp. since you are further from downtown). Parking would be harder than suburban areas, but nothing like Chicago or Boston. Pretty managable in that respect also.
