Water main break cuts off service to much of downtown Minneapolis | StarTribune.com

This is going to be a HUGE mess to clean up. Most of downtown without water and many streets are flooded. Photos with the article.

I was two blocks from home when I ran into horrendous traffic. Each time I got past one traffic jam, I entered another as I tried to find a route home that wasn't closed. Finally, after over an hour, I found a way home that wasn't blocked-off. My water pressure is low, but getting better.

The Guthrie, many of the other theaters, and a lot of restaurants in The Mill and entertainment districts are closed tonight. Given the traffic and the street closures, I wouldn't recommend that anyone come downtown tonight. I suspect that the morning rush hour will be terrible as well.

Similar thing happened years ago in St Paul. Somebody slipped and severed some really basic power cables. Half of downtown St Paul went black. There's a lot of stuff underground you don't want to mess with. They manage to avoid it so much of the time it really makes you wonder what is different when something like this happens. I wonder if it was related to fiber optic cable. That cable is like water to business. Maybe more important than water.

The main question is, will the water freeze so we can play street hockey?

Reminds of a time when so much snow fell that people used cross country skis to get downtown. The newspaper said "If you're skiing downtown, use the blue wax".

I was driving home across the Plymouth Avenue bridge last night and definitely noticed the extra traffic. By the evening, Central was a total mess.

It does seem they have most of it fixed, though. I never had any problems with water and I didn't have to drive through downtown until about noon. There's a detour on Hennepin, but traffic seemed to be flowing smoothly.

I hope that contractor was well-insured. Gotta be a ton of bucks lost due to the disruption. Sort of a mini-version of BP's oil spill.

I also heard it being called a "faulty" water main. I guess we'll find out.
