Long story short - I am originally from Mpls & am coming back to find an old friend who I found out is homeless. Hard part is that I don't know where the homeless hang out. Does anyone know where the homeless hang out during the day? I believe he is in the downtown area. Thanks!

There are quite a few pan handlers that hang out on Nicollet Mall and Hennepin Ave downtown during the day. This would be a good place to start to ask around.

There are a lot of shelters on the far west end of downtown. There's Mary's Place of course, along with one run by the Salvation Army and a couple run by Catholic Charities. A lot of those who stay at the shelters spend the day around the west side of downtown, up and down Nicollet and Hennepin, at the Central Library, and around bus stops and plazas in the area.

EDIT: Regarding bridges, I have often seen makeshift camps underneath 394 just southwest of downtown. If you go on the trail that connects Kenwood Parkway behind parade to the Cedar Lake Trail, they're down there.

I hope you find your friend and can help him/her out!

They don't really hang out on the streets as much as you might thing. They want somewhere warm, dry, safe and free. There are homeless people who do spend their days at the library. You may not even notice they are homeless. I've had friends who said that they could spot the homeless people, because they were the ones who dressed warmly. People who kow they have somewhere warm to go often don't dress as warmly.
