My son is currently looking at going to Marquette next year. We visited this school with my other son about five years ago. One of the main reasons my son chose to go to Creighton in Omaha was because of the surrounding area around Marquette. Can anyone tell me about the crime around the campus? Also, what areas of town shouldn't my son visit?

Thank you

The campus, surrounding area, and even downtown is very safe and well-policed. Crime does happen but is rare. Your son probably has a better chance at winning the Powerball jackpot than getting mugged unless he does something stupid. There are homeless around but they pose no threat except maybe making him uncomfortable. There are scary areas about a mile north and west of campus but the city is not confusing where he would accidentally find himself in those neighborhoods.

Marquette has a 24-hour shuttle program so it is easy to get around without having to walk if he so chooses.

Yeah, if he has basic street smarts, he'll be fine.

There is a police substation at 22nd and Wells. Marquette also has its own campus safety car patrol and foot patrol on campus, located at 16th in between Wisconsin and Wells. Like so many other college campus' there are blue safety phones throughout campus. Also, any student can request a walking safety escort, anywhere, any time and will be escorted on campus by at least two safety patrol people. There is a limo ride van service with regular stops all over campus and near campus, that runs until at least 3am, and it can also pick you up upon request.

Kids don't wander off to the "bad" areas at Marquette. They quickly learn and understand their surroundings.

Marquette and its surrounding off campus areas are very safe. It is not a reason to not attend the school, male or female imo and in the opinion of 8,000 or so undergrads and 12, 000 or so total students annually, with female outnumbering male students.

It's an urban school, so there are chances that your kid will see occasional panhandlers, or interesting urban characters from time to time. These people are harmless. Car break ins, petty theft occur off campus sometimes. Muggings are not common but they do exist. There is a homeless mission not too far from campus. It is very well run. Those people go out in the day time and have to be back at night time. It's a tight ship. Crime doesn't come from those people. Crime would come from teenage gang banger types most of the time for petty theft. It's very isolated, but it can exist. The vast majority of students go through four years without any problems or incidents. I'd say petty smash and grab car stuff seeing something in plain view in a cart parked off campus somewhere would be the most common type of crime. (Kids don't need cars there, and there are plenty of secure pay lots too)

Marquette might not be located in as aesthetically pleasing of an area as University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but it's fine. And, the campus is nice for its size and location and there have been a lot of nice new physical and academic developments completed and planned moving forward. It's a close proximity to downtown and you'll find many Marquette students taking advantage of that fact for internships, social reasons, or for the couple of mile jog to the lake. Downtown Milwaukee is safe.

Most of Milwaukee's crime in general occurs in North city, and NW city.

You have mentioned two Midwestern Jesuit schools. SLU, Loyola Chi, etc...are also "safe" urban schools as well.

I would without any hesitation be very encouraging for your kid to attend Marquette University.

By the way, if your kid remotely likes hoops, or live events, over 4,000 of the student body (more than half) have season tix to hoops games, top 10 attendance in the country this past year. It's a must for great social entertainment there, even if it isn't your thing.

With basic common sense your kid will do fine.

I certainly would NOT scratch Marquette University off the list due to safety concerns. On most campuses, very little crime occurs as you have a lot of police and campus security presence. Also, speaking from experience, students generally do not tolerate a lot of BS from locals. Also, there are a lot easier targets around Milwaukee than MU students. Also, student hang together in groups that will also discourage problems.

Most of the Jesuit universities in the midwest - SLU, Loyola, Xavier, Detroit, and Marquette are in urban neighborhoods that have their share of crime. Calling them "safe" neighborhoods is a bit of a stretch. Your son needs some street smarts and to be aware of the environment when off campus.

In my experience, students get into trouble when they get involved in some serious drinking and then wonder off into places that they don't belong.

Ahhh! He has nothing to worry about! The bad area is on the Northwest side. It's a trashy lower-class area where Whites segregated Blacks to a couple of decades ago during the era of extreme anti-black discrimination, cruelties, and injustices. My grandfather is actually stuck living in a bad side of town right where whites segregated him and my grandmother to before she died in 2007. My parents grew up with absolutely nothing in those areas. Oprah Winfrey also lived over there as matter of fact where she was bare poor. As African American gradually got more rights throughout the 1970s, whites engaged in white flight and separated the wealth of society away from blacks making it that much harder for them to get out of the rut whites had placed them in. As if that wasn't bad enought, whites used loopholes and technicalities to keeps black segregated. Subtle discrimination going on today has caused the black unemployment rate to skyrocket. So yep! The Northwest side where the lower-class black community is, is likely to have a lot of crime. Of course the middle-class black community is doing just fine. Keep in mind though, there's not much of a middle class thanks to racism within the white community. The true ghetto and evil is in the suburbs right out here where me and my family live. I'm African American and have turned out to be quite success actually and have just recently graduated college. I am 23. See! We blacks aren't so bad when we're not living off of absolutely nothing and struggling off our ass thanks to racial cruelties.

Wow, what's this have to do with the question at hand?

A long time ago MU didn't have a nice student housing section. Then MU decided to curb crime in the area and to make more housing available to students, MU started buying every house and building within 10 blocks of the university. Now when you see MU's campus it is one of the most nice looking urban college campuses in the US. Public safety is always driving around and with a boom in student housing in the surrounding area their is usually always people out and about. Maybe 15 years ago it wasn't the best or safest campus but today it is a very nice campus and very safe to attend school.

Marquette's safety and campus were just fine 15 years ago.

And the Campus Circle Project buying up everything didn't work out so well for Marquette and it didn't last too long.

Campus is nice, small but nice, and gets nicer all the time...and immediate off campus areas in all directions are safe.
