If I remember clearly, when anyone is discharged from the military, they receive a DD-214. I also remember that a small business card sized copy of the 214 was provided - ideal to encase in plastic in the event it was asked for.

Why should anything else be necessary?

I never received a wallet-sized DD-214 when I was discharged in 1974.

Well, with current technology, it shouldn't be hard to scan one and reduce it to card size and have it encased in plastic.

I don't find that too practical because one would need a microscope or very a powerful magnifier to read the type on it.

Veterans ID on Driver’s License or ID Card by State by militarybenefits.info . Currently there more than 35 states plus Puerto Rico that provide the veterans designation and most of the remaining states have passed legislation and are in the process of implementing. I am NOT disabled OR retired and have an ID card. The VA issues ID cards to vets that qualify for VA services. If you don't qualify for VA service/are enrolled, the VA will not process you and issue an ID card. You have to be in a higher category than an 8g I believe. Used to work for the VA for 16 years so I know that there are a lot of veterans out there that served honorably BUT do not qualify for VA services. Therefore, do NOT have a VA ID. Same thin with reserve and guard that were never activated for non-training missions. Perhaps the VA OR some federal agency can issue them an ID card.

totally false information !

I am a Vietnam era veteran.
I am in the VA medical system.
I go to a VA clinic
I recently had a hip replacement done at a new civilian hospital and all the paperwork was done by the VA ( this was under the new VA program that has the VA using civilian hospitals when there is a back log or where the VET lives too far away from VA facility)

I will be having my other hip replaced later this year.

I have no Veteran ID.
my SS # is what they used.

When I first applied for VA medical care, my DD214 was required to get me into the VA medical network.

I did not bold words to show I was a smart alec but mainly to help stress the key words to make my post easier to understand.

The only ID the VA issues is a veterans healthcare card. It clearly says that's what it is for on the card. My husband did recently receive a card for the new program that covers you if you are more than 50 miles from a provided, but that does not apply to us. There is no veterans ID card.
