I'm looking at crime statistics in the available areas for my future Michigan settling... Why does Traverse city have such a huge forced rape problem? All other statistics are low but forced rape is more than 2x the national average :S

I didn't know Traverse had a 2 x average for rape. If so, I don't have an answer for you. It's a great small city that I have always felt safe going to and walking around in. If you're thinking of moving to Traverse City I would not let this statistic hold you back. I do the same basic things no matter where I am and just be careful, lock all doors, don't go places late at night and park far from a store, etc. One can move to the place with the least statistics you can have and still end up being that one person something happens to. My two cents anyway.

One thing about rape statistics to keep in mind is the fact that cities with high rapes stats often have a higer percentage of victims that report the crime. Just because a city has a low rape rate does not mean all the rapes are being reported. Every murder is reported, but not every rape. This fact makes rape statistics almost worthless.

Forced rape? As opposed to consensual rape? If it's consensual then it's not rape is it? Could you post a link where you got this information regarding forced rape and it being 2 X the national average? I'm not poking fun either, I've given TC serious thought to moving my family.

Im wondering if it has something to do with it being a big tourist town, and so out of towners maybe force the issue thinking they wont be around long enough to suffer the consequences. Be interesting to see when most claims are made. Wont stop me from moving to the area thats for sure.

i feel safe walking around TC.
Matter of fact, there must not be too much because the news just repeats the same stories over and over. So im thinking if their doing this, then there isnt much to tell out there.

That is a flawed stat. Do not pay attention to it as it's wrong. Traverse City is an EXTREMELY safe place. How many towns of 15000 folks hve 3 police departments patrolling? We have the Grand Traverse County Sheriffs Department, Michigan State Police and the City of Traverse City Police Department, all of whom have offices here. This is the safest place to be. The only real crimes are a few of the Medicaid drug addicts trying to rob a pharmacy on occasion, white-trash trailer dwellers beating each other when drunk, and the occasional DWI. Other than that, nothing to speak of

Sex crimes are always higher in northern Michigan. Look at Gaylord or any other town. Also look at the number of sex offenders.

What you have to realize is, statistics don't apply to northern Michigan. This looking up stats of northern Michigan towns is the type of negativity that you can't have.

I don't put a whole lot of faith or give much credit to the sex offender list. Not when you hear about kids being put on it for consensual sex with their girlfriend and her parents got pissed about it. Or getting caught peeing in alleys and every other stupid thing they try and put you on the list for.
