Wow! I'll admit that I've been away from Michigan for quite a while (left in 1968) but when did we go to eight divisions for high school sports?

Back in the 60s we had classes A, B, C and D. And there are many fewer students in the state today, correct?

Actually for 2008, the population in MI is 1.2 million people higher than it was in 1970, and 2.2 Million higher than in 1960. It was still the 4 "classes" back in the late 80's. I really don't know when they changed to the new system, but I am not used to it at all.

It was 5 or 6 years ago.

The issue was that a team could win all but one game and miss the playoffs because another high school in the same division would go undefeated.

So, the divisions were re-aligned and expanded to allow "deserving" teams to play in the post season.

Gleaned from MHSAA Library--25 Years of MHSAA Playoffs

1975 - The Michigan High School Athletic Association initiates a four class playoff system, with four teams qualifying for each of the four classes (A, B, C and D) for a total of 16 schools playing in the post season playoffs.

1977 - The MHSAA expands the number of qualifying teams from four to eight for each class, for a total of 32 schools playing in the post season.

1985 - The MHSAA adds a pre-regional round to the playoff format. This required each state champion team to win four games during the playoffs. It also again expanded the number of qualifying schools from 32 to 64.

1990 - The MHSAA expands the number of playoff classes from four to eight, doubling the number of qualifying schools from 64 to 128.

1999 - The MHSAA expands the playoffs to 32 qualifying teams per division, for a total of 256 schools participating in the playoffs.

Any Michigan High School football team with either a 5-3 or 6-3 record is assured of a spot in the playoffs. If not enough teams qualify within one of the eight divisions, then teams with 5-4 records (and then with 4-4 records) can qualify, based upon the number of "playoff points" awarded to their regular season schedule, until the 32 slots in the division playoff field are filled.
