Not much is to worry about Waterford. I live in Waterford, and have only almost been the victim of a crime once. It is nothing like Pontiac, but even that, as others have said, is improving and coming back. Wateford has a great chain of lakes that you can enjoy, and a lot of parks. The schools are fine, and the police/fire departments actually work quite well. I like living in Waterford, it can get a bit boing at times but I don't expect much because it is a suburb.
My ex has custody of the kids. They are moving to waterford from Wayne. I know Wayne isnt all that great, but being waterford is next to pontiac I am worried. How is Waterford like? I know they would be going to Waterford schools and I would have to find out where exactly they will live to hopefully get more info about it. I know they will be across from the water.
We lived in Pontiac for a while, it wasn't great, but not horrible-I've certainly seen far worse. My husband has family who lives in Waterford, and she has two elementary school-age kids--she's never had anything bad to say about it, so I'm going to venture a guess that it would probably be fine.
Even though I think Waterford is pretty boring, they do have some beautiful lakes and some great homes so you won't have to worry about any housing stock. There have been some talks about the townships police dept. but I'll let someone who actually lives or is from Waterford to answer any questions on that front.
As far as Pontiac goes, like others have said the majority of the city has gotten better compared to say - 5 years ago and isn't the hellhole that it used to be when it's police department was slashed to near zilch. However I also agree with whoever said to avoid the Telegraph border between Pontiac/Waterford. The neighborhood between Stonegate and M-59 is the worst part of Pontiac and some of that spills over into that edge of Waterford. Otherwise, there's no reason to avoid Pontiac or be afraid of the city, nor do you have much to worry about in most of Waterford.
