If Obama withdraws from Iraq and moves more troops and equipment over to Afghanistan, the equipment that was built for Iraq is incompatible with the terrain of Afghanistan. New equipment should be needed and someone has to manufacture. This is why I ask.

A buddy of mine works for a company that does this in Lansing. He just got hired in about a month ago welding steel.

There are quite a few aerospace companies in GR that supply the military, that have cut back recently. This might help jump-start some more purchasing that would help them.

There is so much worn out equipment, it will take most of the next republican administration to get it halfway replaced/repaired.
Dems tend to short the budget a bit on equipment. It's like free money, they can make it look like money is being saved.
It is, but it's preparedeness and warfighting money that's being channeled elsewhere.

I'd be happy if someone got a handle on waste, fraud, and abuse. I think we could halve the budget--what budget??--if we magically stopped all WFA.

I would hope some work on repair/replacement would happen with all this money that's being thrown around, but it's more about buying votes I fear.

There a several big defense contractors that have a large presence in the Detroit area, largely due to Army TACOM (Tank and Automotive Command) in Warren.

The problem with getting money for worn out equipment is that it isn't sexy. I think that in order to get money from Congress, the services always feel the need to pitch their ideas for the next big thing instead of the nuts-and-bolts, beans-and-bullets things that make the military run on a daily basis.
