okay,

I will give yo that. I snowmobile... good lord, I know the reputation sledders get.

But, I don't go 70+ mph, I go maybe 20. I concentiously (sp?) think about how it would feel to hit a tree going "x" mph, so that slows me down.

I just get irritated at people who take extra risk. People who jay walk at night in black clothes, then get sympathy from people when they are laying on the street bleeding after being hit by a car.

People who get drunk then decide they have to go boating in unfamiliar waters.

Or people who ice fish on thin ice.

I don't know all the science involved in detecting thin ice.... just to my simple simon thinking ()... 50 degrees means ice is melting.

I would not ice fish in 20 below. I don't trust the ice even then. But since I am not a strong swimmer, and have a real fear of water... that is par for course. I would NEVER go out on the ice when temp is above freezing.

NEVER!

It is not that the ice is thin. It moves. It is floating. Lake Erie is on of the worst because it is flowing underneath. In fact it is a very wide river.

^

Then I don't know how the hell anyone would want to get out on the ice. I was out on a open bow boat on Lake St. Clair.
ABout 5 miles off from shore, you could not see land from any direction. We were going straight across to Canada side. For about 1 minute... you could not see land. That was the longest minute of my life.

8 miles off shore and on floating ice... that you can't steer?

Saginaw Bay is a little different. The ice is contained by the shores. Still each year a few people die. The guys watch on the satellites and keep in touch with each other. You have to know what you are doing out there.

The big sheets of ice do not melt as much as they move. Watching the satellite view tells more than the weather.

There is a fix to this, just charge them for a rescue fee. If they put themselfs in danger then they are taking the chance that if they need to be rescued they will be charged a fee.

It does not happen very often, that is what makes it news.

It happens more often then you might think. Not spectaular rescues like 134 men, but every year there are plenty of folks who think they can fish one more day. My son has been on more than his share of rescues. Besides the financial cost, you all have forgotten the risk to the rescuers. Having an accident because an animal ran into the path of your car is different than someone who has had one too many and gets behind the wheel of an automobile. There are "legitimate" rescues on water. Those are entirely different than people who foolishly risk their lives and the lives of their rescuers. At-water rescues are never easy, and always have an element of danger to both parties.

Have you heard that after all that, many went back out the next day to retrieve their equipment? Too bad the sheriff's office and the USCG weren't there on shore writing out tickets.

Can you find some links on this?? I have been trying to find figures and can not do it. Makes me think it does not happen enough to keep records.
