I'm from San Francisco but planning to visit Michigan for some school events. I plan to take flight to Detroit and rent a car to head over to my main area in Lansing during 3/1/2009 to about 3/9/2009. I know nothing about this area and its weather. I need to know what car I can rent. Ideally, I would like to rent an economy of some sort but am I going to have a problem with snow? Do I need to rent an SUV instead? Thanks in advance

It can be anything from a blinding blizzard to sunshine and near 70F. Check this about a week before you leave and you'll get an idea what to expect at the particular time you're coming to our beautiful state.

7-Day Forecast for Latitude 42.35°N and Longitude 83.04°W (Elev. 626 ft)

Normally we're starting to warm up and if we get snow it's light and melts quick. If you're not used to driving on snow and ice and the forecast calls for it, get a small SUV (an Escape would be more than enough). But remember, just because you're in an SUV, it doesn't make you invincible to lost traction and spin-outs. Some people here still can't understand that.

In March the weather is all over the damned place. Any car you rent here will be equipped with snow tires. If the roads are bad, SLOW DOWN and you will not need 4WD to get where you're going.

Economy car will be fine. Lansing doesn't get as much snow as the Western part of the State anyway. If it snows, drive 5 - 10 mph slower than the natives are driving and you'll be perfectly fine.

Very well said.....in other words flip a coin. Isn't Grand Rapids airport closer than Detroit to Lansing. I know GR just recently announced some flights to FL $99 one way and Las Vegas pretty cheap, Allegiant airlines. OP is in San Fran but is Dtroit the best way to get here?

Usual watery in March?

I think that is an oxymoron.

You can fly right to Lansing.

Ok, here you go. Straight from the farmers almanac.

Mar. 1-3: Heavy rain to snow
Mar. 4-7: Showers
Mar. 8-9: Sunny, warm

Your guess is as good as ours!
(They also said a flock of 24 geese will fly over lansing the 6th of March at 2pm)

Oh great. The pilot will have to ditch in the Grand River.
