I have four wheel drive and let me tell you, you are correct, sir! In fact, it doesn't always help even when you're going slow on icy roads. I'm the first house in off the corner off the main road and there's a small downhill from my driveway to the corner. The plows come by and the snow on the road becomes so smooth it's like ice (and more times than not it'll freeze at night and turn into ice). I once pulled out of my driveway and literally went about 5mph towards the corner and I couldn't stop. I have four wheel drive and anti-lock brakes and I slid right past the corner. Thank god there was no cross traffic coming or it could have been bad. I've seen cars end up turning off onto the shoulder and getting stuck in deep snow as a result, too. I see a lot of folks come flying up my road thinking they'll have plenty of time to stop and they probably don't realize there's ice on that little downhill and it worries me every time that someone is going to slide out and crash into another car.

Having lived 40 years in MI before moving to the East Coast - Are you kidding me I've had my car in the ditch even before I had my drivers license. I guess that's why now I 'm such a good driver! LOL Good Luck - Remember to slow down when it's slippery and if you can see the reflection on the road of the rear end lights of the car in front of you then there is black ice!!! Also if it's not slippery don't go too slow you might get rear ended!!
GOOD LUCK!!

Remember as well that in the late Fall and early Spring if you are following somebody down a wet road, and the vehicle ahead of you is NOT leaving visible tracks in the water on the road... it isn't water you are driving on, it is ice, slow down!

Yes I've been in a ditch. The brst rule is drive slow. The big issue sometimes is the black ice. The other thing that got me was early spring when there are patches of snow and then clear roads. The snow, ice patches come when you don';t expect it and then you can loose control.
