My partner and I are raising two kids. A 10 year old and a baby. We are looking considering moving to the kalamazoo area for a new job. We are looking for a safe family centered area with other same sex couples or people who would be open to our family. Does anyone have experience in the area?

thank you

sue

Hi sue
I am not sure exactly what neighborhood would be the most open, I think Kalamazoo in general is a very open community. I had a student with same sex parents in Kalamazoo they were a wonderful family-I was just a student teacher though at the time and I am not sure where the family lived though because I taught at a magnet school and students can be bussed in from different areas. Good luck and I am not sure what to tell you on how to find out more information. Welcome to the Kzoo area if you decide to move there the magnet school was Spring Valley center for exploration

I have read that winchell is a good school but the magnet schools look interesting. She is very good in science. Do i have to apply to the magnet schools?

Magnet schools totally rock! I love them!!!
If she is into science I would really look into Edison Environmental Science Acedemy, Spring Valley Center for Exploration, or Woodward School For Technology and Research........I am not positive about the application process it is worth calling....they accept on a lottery system! good luck and ask more questions if you have any

If I had to pick one neighborhood that was friendly to the "gays", it may the the Vine neighborhood. Its close to downtown where students live.

Welcome to the Vine Neighborhood Association (http://www.vineneighborhood.com/history.htm - broken link)

I've always found Kalamazoo to be pretty progressive...a blue island in a reddish sea. I've had same sex couples as customers and nobody thinks anything of it. So, I don't think you'd have a real problem wherever you go in the city.

Welcome to Kalamazoo by the way, It's a really nice, extremely unique city.
