I've never swam in the water there. I know you can at a few beaches in Mackinaw City (such as the one pictured...at our hotel) but you can't swim on the Island due to the current.

Oh, this picture brings back memories...as a kid, most of our family vacations took place in the U.P., camping in tents and washing washing our hair under water pumps exactly like the one in this picture. Ahhh, the good ol' days!

I've spent a lot of time in the U.P. during my life :-)
Here are a few from along Lake Superior near Munising during a hunt for waterfalls in the area.

Grand Harbor Island Lookout near Munising

Horseshoe Falls **This is one you have to pay to get into, the rest were free.

Miners Castle, along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Miners Falls

Wagner Falls

It's a long drive to see those falls, just FYI. You can drive to New York/Niagara Falls in the time it takes to get to the Western U.P.

The ones I posted are all in/around Munising (east of Marquette).

Yeah, I know. I'll pick Lansing, MI to Munising, since Lansing is centrally located in the Lower Peninsula (where 80% of Michiganians live): 353 miles

from: lansing, michigan to: munising michigan - Google Maps

Lansing to Niagara Falls: 315 Miles

from: lansing, michigan to: niagara falls, canada - Google Maps

Just sayin that it's more than just "getting out more" to see those falls. It's more like a weekend trip.

Fair enough, though it might be highly convenient for those in the Upper Peninsula to go to the falls around Munising vs. Niagara Falls; and lilbear didn't specify if he/she was thinking of moving to Lower or Upper Michigan. I was just clarifying where the falls were located from my pics.

Thanks everyone for the beautiful pictures. I have never been to Michigan but now I plan on taking a vacation there this fall to see all of those beautiful trees!
