Metro Airport is a short 15 minutes away from Dearborn.

I did not mean to imply that your degree is no good.
It is worthless here in Michigan because there are so many people with advanced degress (out of work) that you would be competing with.
Those that have a high school diploma are even more worse off.

On the bright side we have great universities.
Check out U of M Dearborn or Eastern Michigan University for your advanced degree.

Wink Cold

Coming to Michigan to get an education is a excellent decsion.
You cannot go wrong. The professors and programs are demmanding.
Wayne State and Michigan are the only schools in southeast lower Michigan that offer PHD programs.

Our socialist canadaian born governer is balancing the state budget on the backs of college students and their parents....in other words tution is not cheap.

learn this motto "graduate and go"

I said in previous posts Michigan Universities are this states brightest resource. I hope that someday the citizens of this state will finally let go of the "entitlement" of life time factory jobs mindset that has so permeated this region.

It would be great if Michigan had a reseach triangle area like they have in North Carolina. This state is slowly rooting out the unions and showing blue collar folks the door. (Wyoming is calling) But it will be awhile.

The weather stinks. It is mostly gray and dreary. If you can take average winter temps in the 20s than this is for you. However those -5 below days are a real treat.
Weather is worse and the snow deeper the farther you go up north.

Everyone has a car for sale. With so many folks out of work you can find a good deal if you really look.
Do not buy a car in Detroit. You will get ripped off.

What needs to happen is that the city of Detroit and the suburbs need to work together, or you will see Metro Detroit keep heading in the wrong path, and this seems to be getting worse and worse, and too quickly. Things seem to really be starting to change for the worse there, and very fast. If Southfield and Livonia could just help Detroit out in some way. 14% unemployment rate for a city is just horrible. You see numbers like that in Eastern Europe. The city of Detroit cant just depend on the suburbs, but they need to start working together as well.
Umm no.. They ALREADY bus up thousands of inner city folk that accept low wages, and push people further to find work.. I fear for my kids when they are workin' age, they will be competing against low wage accepting minorities.

City of Detroit can help themselves, and start with electing new leadership.

Anyway, on the bright side, I *MAY* have found work, too early to say, but I hope they hire me.. PIZZA DELIVERY! Thats right, I went from making $100,000-150,000 a year, to possibly making $10-15 an hour if I am lucky.. Go Michigan!

One of the only jobs I can find because most inner city minorities don't have cars, so I have a huge leg up over them. My degrees mean nothing apparently these days.

Boy of boy ... I read the posts with saddness, for my husband & I finally got tired of working less than a year in the Grand Rapids, MI area & then get laid off. Lay offs result in no insurance & it'a a longggggg time before you land another one & then, it's usually less money & you end up paying more for rotten medical insurance. And, dental insurance ... plan on $1,500.00 a year MAX!

I was born & raised in MI ... never dreamed I'd leave, but I sure did & it was THE best thing we could of done! The only jobs in MI are in the medical field. There is a 1 1/2 yr. wait to get into a college & after 4 yrs. you can think about finding a job! Who has 6 yrs. to do that?

I researched some of the states & I can tell you, (search some of the most popular search engines in different states... you'll see!) Wyoming, Nebraska, Wisconsin & Colorado have more jobs than they do people! Most of their sales tax is less than MI. We just moved & everyday we both say ... why didn't we move sooner? Life is good! It can be!

When you job search online ... look around, some places offer to assist with relocation costs! My advise ... research jobs, the company & the area. Yes, it takes time, but what else are you doing? I spent 10-12 hours a day on the computer, searching & emailing our resumes. But, the payoff was so worth it!

No regrets here! We'll never look back. It's nice to be living again & not struggling so hard.

Michigan is in dyer need of help. I will just put it that way. The people of Metro Detroit need to work together, not keep seperating themselves from eachother. Plain and simple. You dont help out the main city (Detroit), than the suburbs are going to start suffering as well. And from what i have seen and heard everything is beggining to in Metro Detroit.

My God are you in luck, especially if you move to Dearbornistan. You'll have no trouble at all finding a high-paying job as an English/Arabic translator.

Well I didn't get the Pizza Job I guess.

I took my resume in to the owner, he handed me an "Application" and told me to bring it back.. I asked if I can fill it out there, and he said "If you want, but you need to xerox your drivers license, insurance, and registration".

So I came back later with all of that information, and was told "I might call you, but I am getting a lot of applications".

In otherwords, I got the big blowoff..Employers are so goddamn rude in Michigan now because they can pick and choose from desperate people. Also, a lot of these low-end job companies dislike hiring educated professionals because we as a rule, demand more pay, and respect. They can generally push around young kids or retarded poor people.

Really sad.. Not even a pizza delivery job in this state.

Believe it or not, a lot of Michigan people are ending up in Gillette, WY - a small town with an urgent need for experienced tradesmen like welders and carpenters. I suppose a lot depends on your profession, but there's a high demand for unskilled positions also and some professions. However Wyoming is not the right place for everyone. http://www.gillettenewsrecord.com/classifieds/?loc=detail&main=EMPLOYMENT (broken link)

The problem is, a lot of people can't follow to the boom states, which often turn out to bust in a few years. Florida is bust, the Carolinas are busting, Seattle will likely bust under the crush of people heading there for jobs.

My wife is gainfully employed in Michigan via Healthcare industry. I am just the one that can't find any work. If we went to the huge trouble of moving, only to find me average paying work, it would totally not be worth it. I am not close to my family, but she is.

Final option we are considering for me is to buy some dirt cheap homes to fix up and rent out as my work. Because the housing market is so busted here, you can find reasonable homes for $50K range that used to cost $150k.
