I am looking to relocate to MI with my husband and 2 small children ages 3 and 1.
I am not familiar with Michigan. We would like to be near Detroit without being in Detroit.
I am originally from NYC and have no desire to live in Detroit.

Can anyone suggest areas that are clean, low crime, good schools and lots to do for families?
We will be buying a home, so suggestions where good housing is also welcome.
Also we need to stay within in a 50 mile radius of Troy Michigan. This is where my husband will be working and he does not want a long commute.

Default relocating

Troy is a nice area with good schools. There is a lot of nice homes, low crime. Another nice area is Grosse Pointe. It is by the water and they have excellent schools, water privileges for residents only, which is nice. Bloomfield HIlls is another nice suburb, not far from Troy at all.

Depends what kind of area your looking for...More country/suburb like feel w/lots of strip malls, etc.? Or an older establised city that's full of bungalow, craftsman type houses, w/mostly unique local shops?

Also what price range are you looking for housing?

Try Romeo...or Shelby Township or Utica or anything east or west of these towns.

Troy is great itself, you should consider there. That's where my family lives. On the Morgan Quitno Press list that city is like the 4th safest city in the country. It's nice and there is plenty of shopping, freeway access, things to do, excellent schools, etc. Another good place is Rochester Hills and the Clarkston area if you want to go out further.

I recommend Utica or Sterling Heights. They have affordable housing and are safe and very family-oriented. I could live here the rest of my life if it was near the ocean and warm and sunny...hence, why I'm moving

Best of luck with your relocation!

I live in Oxford and it is a great family area with bike trails a cute downtown area and nice people. There is also Lake Orion, Clarkston, and Brandon Twp. all with good schools. They are about 30 to 40 mins. from Troy.

Good luck. It is hard to go someplace that you really know nothing about. My family might move to Columbus, OH.
