This is a great read!
Which cities have the most, least satisfied residents? Gallup poll gauges pulse of metros | MLive.com

Holland-Grand Haven is top in the state and #3 in the nation.
2nd place is Kalamazoo-Portage coming in at #19 and 3rd place is Ann Arbor at #35.

Here is the break down for the state:

176. Detroit-Warren-Livonia, MI: 78.5

Flint is in the bottom 10 of the nation, but at least they were not last.

If we look at this like Michigan was a conference in college football, then we can really see how impressive are some of these standings.
Out of 50 states (or conferences if you will ), there are 189 metros (teams).
Of those 189, we have 4 metros in the top 50 with 2 of them in the Top 25.
Every college football fan knows that being in the Top 25 is very impressive and that if your school is in the top 10 then you have serious bragging rights. Being #3 in the nation means that you are vying for the national championship!

Holland-Grand Haven is rocking!
Kalamazoo-Portage is excellent
and
Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids-Wyoming are showing very well nationally.

I'm actually surprised that even in the bottom ten, between 72.8 and 77.1 percent of respondents said that they were satisfied with their city.

Most people that do not like where they live, will find some way out. Especially the young. Look at how many people have left Flint and Detroit in the last 30 years.

Having 1/4th of your population not satisfied with where they live is really bad.

I think this confirms my suspicions that residents in the Lansing area don't have much local pride.

Have you ever been to Bakersfield? It's grown quite a bit (we were just through there a couple of weeks ago) but one of the main drags is named Buck Owens Blvd.

The first time that I saw Bakersfield, I thought that I was someplace in Oklahoma.

Stockton, like San Bernardino, is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings.

100% true. It is amazing how two cities an hour apart in the same state (Lansing and Grand Rapids) can be SO different. Don't get me wrong, I think Lansing is a decent place. But local pride and optimism are not strong suits. I think the reliance on large, faceless employers (GM, state government, MSU) doesn't help with the energy and vibrance in the area, either.

No, I have never been there. I here that it gets very hot there, but know nothing else.
Is there anything there of interest?
I had always heard that it is more of a blue color type of town, is that still the way it is?
