An article I referenced cited Little Traverse Bay as the "motherlode" for these, but also places like Peterson Park which is not too far north of Leland - so you were in a good area.

The entire area was covered in the freshwater sea that produced petoskey stones. Proof being, I've found them in the backyard of my dad's house which is 660' higher than Grand Traverse bay. Any gravel pit will yield them as much as the lake shores. I have found a number of odd fossils in the gravel pit where I grew up.

Oh yeah, we loved it all!

On Monday we stopped at silver beach at the carousel on the way up. my son loved that! and we ate at the little pizza place there. We walked down the boardwalk and pier in Grand Haven.. that was gorgeous. we just picked up fast food to go there. We checked out the beach at our hotel when we got there and didn't do a whole lot else. The sunset was gorgeous from our hotel though!

Tuesday, we got up and headed to Leland, where walked around fish town and the beach and found that Petoskey stone. We went on to Glen Arbor to check out the cherry republic and get some lunch. Then we back tracked a bit and spent some time playing n the beach, then we went to the Dunes and climbed to the top! Yes even with our 14 month old. He loved it! We did the pierce stocking scenic drive, then headed back to TC. We ate at dons diner for dinner.

Wednesday..we actually decided to drive to Petoskey in the afternoon...mostly because my son needed a nap and would only nap in the car! Lol so we thought it was a good opportunity. We went to kilwins chocolate factory and a beach up there. We stopped at the lighthouse in Charlevoix... We ate lunch in elk rapids at this pizza place before heading up...it was awful. Horrible service..and of course my son was cranky needing a nap. So not a good experience. But that was probably the only thing we didn't care for. After we got back to TC we did a little shopping downtown and ate dinner at Bubbas... It was very good!

Thursday we had brunch at Cracker Barrel... Not unique I know... But we love it anyway. We went to the old state hospital and then back downtown topick up a few souvenirs... We had some ice cream at Moomers, the best ice cream I've ever had I think! Then we headed out.. We stopped in Grand Rapids on the way home to meet up with some friends.. Then came home. It was a great mini vacation!

Pierce Stocking Drive: did you make the stopoffs?
Grand Haven: strolled/shopped Chinook Pier? Your hotel was on the lake?
Climbed at the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb on M-109?
Charlevoix, TC, Leland, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids - you covered a lot of territory in four days. I can spend a week at The Bear alone.
Another great beach is here just north of Ludington.

There is a popular ice cream factory in South Haven.
