The beauty of Michigan is that it offers open enrollment school of choice. We live within the city limits of Lansing and there is NO WAY I would send my kids to a Lansing school. I've found that many of the surrounding districts (smaller/suburb districts) actually DO offer more that meets the needs of many different students.

I don't know much about the districts around you, but I would explore/call/visit them...ask questions based on your child's needs. PLUS....maybe you would qualify for an IEP? Have you looked into North Muskegon? I do know they are a VERY highly rated district and usually, but not always, higher rated districts have more resources (which can contribute to their success).

You could, although I am not a fan of them, look into a charter school. Myself, I wouldn't opt for that unless it was no other choice. The problem I have with charters is there really isn't an easy go-to chain of command above the principal level (at least that was my experience).

The beauty of Michigan is that you can Homeschool and don't have to report a darn thing to the state. There are a million online programs to 'learn' and your child will be better off because rote memorization is NOT LEARNING.

But No Child Left Behind is moving 90% of SpEd students into a full-inclusion co-teaching setting. Self conatained classrooms are now for the severely impaired, generally 60 IQ or lower.

If you child is LD, they would probably be in a co-teaching class. If they do not have an IEP, they definately would be in general education classes.
