Our lighthouses are one of our treasures. Last year I drove all of M22. Anyone who does this won't be sorry. It's gorgeous!

My itinerary for a new visitor:
The nice drive starts at Frankfort - eat and gas up. Overlook and beaches in Elberta.
Continues through Sleeping Bear: left on Pt Betsie Rd to Point Betsie lighthouse; County Hwy 708/Lake Mich Road to the park at end (river outlet and activity); Trail End Road to Bass Lake (solitude); Empire visitor center - get info and a park pass here, check the town and beach; turn on Hwy 109 to Pierce Stocking scenic drive (make the stopoffs here); to Glen Haven beach and museums; Glen Arbor: eat, gas up, get coffee (M-22 starts again); Thorenson Rd>Sunset Drive.>Sunset Shores Dr (more Lk Mich beaches); explore Pyramid Point if you have time (historic farm relics); Bohemian Rd>along Lk Mich Rd (more beaches); red schoolhouse at Little Traverse Lake; Good Harbor Trail (more beaches); Leland/Fishtown (need a camera here); thru Northport to lighthouse at the state park; south thru Suttons Bay to Traverse City (not a lot to see here except a beach at Greene Park and a casino). Center Rd/M-37, the elevated spine of Old Mission Point to the park and lighthouse.
Arcadia has a gift shop where you can get "M-22" tees, sweats, and souvenirs. Just north is a great Lk Mich overlook (take a camera up the stairs).
This is only part of what's there, but you may be strapped for time. I am envious.

The much photographed red schoolhouse is south of Leland 6 miles or so, near Little Traverse Lake on M 22. I concur with the suggested itinerary above, but would add a couple moderate stops at the local wineries that dot the Leelanau landscape. Good Harbor Vineyards is good (also S. of Leland) Verterra is excellent and has a tasting room right in Leland across the street from the Bluebird, Gills Pier Winery is just n of Leland a few miles, Leelanau Cellars is in Omena (S. of Northport) as is the wonderful Tamarack Craftsman gallery, and Black Star Farms is just S. of Suttons Bay. There are many more, but all I've mentioned are on 22 and worthy of a stop...but probably not to all of them in one day.
Enjoy your trip, and be sure to visit historic Fishtown in Leland.
