No responses so far. Well do you mean downtowns only, or overall?
Both downtowns are relatively small. Holland's is somewhat gentrified. I haven't been to T.C.'s downtown in many years, but the city itself is quite hectic in the summertime (tourists). Holland has a university close to downtown and is socially conservative. I know that TC gets touring musical acts which Holland doesn't - due to more tourism.
For nightlife overall it would be T.C. imo.

I think TC has a better night life. The downtown area has really been a stand out for a long time now. There is always lots going on there especially in the summer.

I can add a bit more about Holland - it is quiet. The nightspots are what you would expect in a small college town, a brewpub, small, quaint eateries and taverns - staffed and patronized by students. There is a tourist industry, a busy state park. Weekend entertainment is usually by locals or from the college. A small but good music store (R.I.T.). A world-renowned Tulip Festival which makes downtown lively for a few days.
I do know that headline acts sometimes pass through TC, and it jumps in the summertime.

I think in the summer Traverse has a live music night on Fridays which is all along Front St downtown. I was there on a night they had jazz playing, and you could barely walk around there were so many people.

Street performers every Thursday evening. Holland has five or six downtown nightspots with live music: New Holland Brewing, the Curragh, Lemonjellos, City Vu, and sometimes Parrotts, Boatwerks and others. A couple times a year you can't beat it as Groovewalk puts bands in a dozen venues. Tulip time also boasts beer tents and outside concert venues. There's also concerts in the parks all summer logn -- everything from rock & roll to kids stuff to the local American Legion band.
