Where would I fly into if visiting from New England to see the Upper Peninsula area of Michigan? On the Today show this morning Kathy Lee was talking about her weekend there visiting friends, and made it sound very appealing. She tried to compare it to somehting and was having a hard time as she said it was so unique and beautiful. She mentioned it was like a combination of places like Cape May, NJ and Nantucket Island, MA. This sounds like a beautiful place.

Actually I heard she was not even in the U.P., but somewhere in the Northern Lower. That should not deter you from visiting though as the U.P. is simply amazing! I believe any one of these cities/towns has an airport.
Escanaba
Hancock
Iron Mountain
Ironwood
Manistique
Marquette
Menominee
Sault Ste. Marie

I would fly into Marquettes Sawyer International Airport if possible, because it is right in the middle of all the beauty, and well...its in Marquette which is an amazing city!

Thank you for your suggestions. She mentioned a place called Harbor Springs. I have no idea of the location.

That is on the westside of the state, in the northern half of the lower peninsula. That truely is an amazing area also!

That's where I grew up.

There is a municipal airfield there. Where? Consult the back of your left hand. On the left side of your middle finger.....that would be Harbor Springs. There are no commercial carriers but you can land a nice Cessna Citation there no probs (just flew out on one about a month ago).

Here's the info:

Traverse City or Pellston would be the closest to Harbor Springs, but the area is beautiful. Harbor Springs is also close to Sleeping Bear Dunes, absolutely spectacular area of northwest Michigan.

The U.P. shares a lot with Maine. both are off the beaten track, a bit isolated.... I would not put too much stock in what Kathy Lee says, she is a twit.( appears to be correct, as Harbor Springs IS under the Bridge).
For a real feel of what the " other Michigan" is all about , DO fly into Sawyer International, There are connecting flights via Detroit and Chicago. Best airfairs are from Chicago ( about 45 Min from Ohare). Business at the airport is up 53 per cent,we are served by American Eagle, Delta,( Canadair) and several Charter Airlines. You can rent a car at the airport ( 20 miles south of Marquette), or take city transit into Marquette, for other choices.
One last note , The U.P. is no cape May, other than its at the end of the road. The only part of the U.P. thats like Nantucket would be Mackanaw Island..... Now , Copper Harbor , is MUCH more like parts of coastal down east Maine. There are several folks on these threads that practice trading places...Maine and the U.P.
