Hi,

My fiance's company just transferred him to the Miami office, and as part of his relocation deal, they're going to give me a job, too. The only thing is, it is looking like the job is going to be in Fort Lauderdale.

If we live in Miami, how bad is the commute if I were to drive from South Beach to Fort Lauderdale Monday through Friday? I would probably need to be at work around 8am and I would be done around 5pm.

Also, we have talked about living in a city between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, but we only have one car, and it wouldn't be possible for us to have another car. Could I drive to Fort Lauderdale and he take the train to Miami (he's working downtown)?

Please give me some idea of how long the commute would be from Miami to Fort Lauderdale! Google Maps says it's about 30 miles and 37 minutes. But it doesn't say anything about traffic, etc.

Thanks!!

If you're planning on taking Tri-Rail to Fort Lauderdale, I suggest you live in Downtown or Brickell, since both of these areas have direct connection to Metrorail and to Tri-Rail. Your other option would be Aventura, which has decent Tri-Rail connectivity, and is closer to FLL. From Downtown, one could drive along 95, and the other could take the Metro to Tri-Rail to FLL.

How long is the commute using the train versus driving? I'm trying to get a feel for how much time would be spent commuting from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale.

But thanks for the tip about the Tri-Rail and Metrorail!

Taking the Metro and Tri-Rail from Downtown Miami to FLL would take probably around 40 minutes. Driving would probably take longer depending on the time of day. It could range from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on the time of day really.

Tri-Rail is aged out now. Miami has no money to update it. It is dirty and noisy, but at least it is safe.

You will need take either metrobus (route 57) or metrorail, then transfer to tri-Rail. Expect about 1h for one way.

A drive from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale in the mouring will take no more than 35-45 min. You can just take the express lane and go 70-75mph limit is 55-65mph but no one follows it. There is not much traffic going away from downtown in the mourning. The drive back might take a little longer but again not that bad. You are going the opisite way of rush hour traffic. So unless there is an accident the drive should not take too long.

If he is working downtown why not move downtown? He could take metro mover to work no problem. that would free you up to take the car. That would be my suggestion. Downtown Miami is a empty shell right now, but it has potential.
