Geez I am always surprised at ignorance I come across. Besides the fact America covers much more than the US, look at Mayans, Pacific Islanders, Chinese, Indians, Japanese, Greeks, Romans I mean lets just say most of the world use tattoos so I dont have to keep listing countries/cultures.
In all of these examples of Western cultures (and most non-Western ones), tattooing was done to slaves, criminals, or social outcasts. One example the article doesn't even mention is concentration camp prisoners.
When you think about it, military tats also fit the pattern, because modern military is akin to temporary slavery.
You never see kings, generals or admirals tattooing themselves to show their status.
Everything in Mexico is local. Local foods, local idioms, local norms. In our village, tattoos that show outside of a short sleeve shirt will disqualify someone from a job. Judge if you will, but that's the way it is.
My daughter recently got a tattoo on her right inside wrist---without my advance knowledge or permission I suppose from now on she will have to hear long sleeves, and/or a thick band bracelet or watch.
I heard you'll get some funny looks, moreso than in the US, if you have tattoos in Mexico. Anyone know one way or another? Just curious.
It depends where you go. I'd say 65% of people in Tijuana have a tattoo. If you go further south it will be way less but tattoos are way too common to be taboo anymore. Plus gang and prison tats look very different than the arty variety.
Most Mexicans do not have tattoos and this is regardless of socioeconomic status, tattoos are a very American thingthat thankfully has not been popularized South of the Border. It's very easy to spot a Mexican American in Mexico by how they dress or if they have tattoos.
Sorry malcorub but no, it is not strictly or a very American thing, although the art of professional tattooing has significantly increased in popularity in America (and other countries as well) in the last few decades or so.
Globally, it has been around for eons.

This is an interesting topic. Where I am from in Toronto Canada large tattoos are pretty normal and the hipster's have stolen the trend so those who use to use tattoos to show they were a bad ass gangster have gotten ripped off lol and have to come up with a new idea to make themselves stand out in my city. I am not even kidding. I am pretty shocked at how many men and women have full arm, neck or leg tattoos.
I think in places where gang violence is a more real threat people are less likely to glorify this practice as it usually helps explain who is and who is not involved in certain gangs or criminal organizations.
It is not like in my city where the girl next door decides to tattoo up her neck with butterflies on her neck because she feels depressed and likes pretty butterflies so she wants to see them on her neck to make her happy.
Visible tattoos are so common here that employers have given up on trying to enforce having them covered or we would have no one to work. It is not up common to have a professional with a visible tattoo. Due to how common it is the cultural attitude and stigma's associated with it have changed. For example if the nurse that cares for you 90 years old aunty rocks a neck tattoo then you are no longer going to be always associating the neck tattoo with a thug.
I think tats are useful in identifying people with low IQs.
"max.b and " home is where are about " are the only ones that identify the true nature of tattoos: They exemplify " Low class." My first impression of seeing any one with tattoos is a connection in my mind with the prison system and gangs. It is to me eye pollution....
I tip my head to any man or woman who have chosen not to follow such a disgusting trend. There is nothing more beautiful that seeing any person without them, man or woman. Further more, these people that have subjugated themselves to having tattoos, ever think of how they will look when they get older, and the skin begins to sag ?..........totally hideous.!!!!!
I will say that trends are for FOLLOWERS......EXHIBITIONISTS, and for people that do not care much about themselves....to mark ones body FOREVER? No way......
