The 240D is a great car. I currently own one. Yes, they are slow but a 240D will make you become a better driver. Why you ask? Because the car lacks power, you are constantly thinking ahead when driving this car.
Funny. That was three cars ago for my daughters. Did not get the Mercedes. Right now one has a 1992 Lincoln Town Car (just bought it) and one has a 1997 grand caravan (horrible repairs costs, but it seems to be working now, this was number two for them). There was another Caravan earlier (transmission failed). Maybe we should have bought the Mercedes.
I know the 83 benz is a slug but the mpg is good & i dont have a heavy foot. Diesel fuel is higher then regular fuel in ca (50 cents a gal higher, $3.99).
I wish we would have bought the Mercedes. the towne car turned out to be a very good car, but the series of Caravans, not so much. Recently replaced the third caravan with a 1998 Volvo V70 Xc wagon. While a neat car it seems to need a whole lot of work and volv parts are insanely expensive. At least it was cheap. I may go back to looking for another mercedes if i can get a cheap enough one. We still have more drivers coming up through the ranks.
It is not a good car for a young girl, or anyone for that matter. They are not just slow, but dangerously slow. We are talking 67 horsepower in a 3,000 pound car. They do run forever, 500,000 miles with no rebuilds are common. The problem is it literally will not get out of its own way. Teenage girls are probably the worst drivers and are likely to pull out in front of someone on a left turn. In this car, they would get hit. I posted a link on a 0-60 run of one of these car, it takes over 30 seconds, and this is the stick shift!!!
I would have gotten the old MB. as before buying mine I was reading that the motors are easily 500k motors and those will out last any American or *** box on the road today' it's been proven just look and see how many old mb diesels you still see running on the roads. I don't know where you are but here in cali I see a lot of them. also from my readings is that the transmissions give out at 200k miles but mines still shifts smooth. the only real problem I had with mine was the speedo went out and that was 750.00 just for the part not counting installation. as for my 300D the W123 is one of the most reliable engines ever
